I suppose Payton's announcement is why this forum has been relatively quiet
today.
Isn't it great? The longest titleless drought in Lakers history is a meager
12 years. The longest Finals appearance drought is a meager 9 years. After
the back-to-back titles in 1987 and 1988 (cementing the Lakers over the
Smelltics** as the Team Of The 80s), the Lakers have now added 3 more rings
onto the pile.
And now...when all the league was rejoicing over the death of the latest LA
dynasty...Gary Payton and Karl Malone. That's good for 3 more titles. Ho
hum... Cracks me up that Ainge groveled to Malone to become a Smelltic
while Malone OFFERED Kupchak to play for the LLE. That's funny, isn't it?
Wake me up when the Lakes are at SEVENTEEN!!!!!
** When was the last time the Smelltics won the title? Well, it was when
Madonna's "Live To Tell" was the No. 1 Billboard song. That's a long
fucking time ago - 1986 (the year of Bill Buckner). So long ago that her
tits were still slightly perky. Sorry, Bostonians. Your teams just aren't
relevant. :=(

And Duster never gets this upset. He usually laughs things off in his own
unintelligible way, but he felt the need to use the geezer card about a post
that wasn't even addressing the Spurts. You know he's scared. At least
he's got more to lose next year when his team becomes one hit wonders again.
Now I can't speak for everyone in here, but in my humble opinion,
basketball itself is irrelevent. It's a boring game, and a winter
sport for people who can't skate. So who really cares anyway? This is
a hockey forum and by the way, when was the last time that the LA
Queens won a cup? As for football, so the Patriots are irrelevant?
When was the last time that an LA won a Super Bowl... come to think of
it when was the last time that LA had a football team? Talk about
irrelevant! 8-P

See L.A. for class
On March 21 in Los Angeles, former Celtics great (who broke the hearts
of many Lakers fans) Bill Russell had his picture on the scoreboard.
The fans gave him a long ovation.
The previous night, when it was announced that Shaq O'Neal scored his
20,000th point, the fans in Sacramento booed. Then, to make matters
worse, a the game ball was defaced, presumably by a Sacramento fan.
Clinton E. Parish
Sacramento
Rest in Peace, Francis Dayle "Chick" Hearn : 1916 - 2002
It's not hard to imagine Russell getting a standing ovation. I would bet that
if some long time Laker greats-like Elgin Baylor or Wilt Chamberlain (mayhe
rest in peace) were introduced in Boston, they would get a similar ovation.
Fact is, Laker fans are really not as passionate as other fans. It's a typcial
problem in a warm weather city.

That's funny because the Laker crowd gave Russell a standing O this year at
a game in Los Angeles.
How's it feel to be completely embitched like that?
> And you are ignorant!! So what is your point?
That you are ignorant. So what's your point?
Wow....I haven't seen the impressive "I know you are but what am I" defense
since that great match in 6th grade, little Joey versus little Tommy.
My day has been made.
Yes, I do understand that the Lakers gave Russell a standing O this year; nice
to know they can leave their seats.
But I maintain that as fans go, they are still comparatively passive and
nonchalant. Give me a cold weather city any day to get some passion.

How impressive. I haven't been told something like that since 6th grade.
That makes my day.
And what's your hypothesis for this phenomenon?

No -- just smarter. When the Lakers work hard (I don't even mean win, just as
long as they play hard) LA fans are rabid. The Forum used to be a rocking barn
that no one in their right mind would want to enter without a Laker shirt on.

That's what makes Fletcher such a valuable member to this NG. He has a

The fact that that idiot rambled on about something completely

Check this out, Gay. :-)
Buying simply means loading your team with big nam players that come from
free agency...I don't think the dollar figures are overly critical to it.
Just that you're getting your people from other organizations. Though I
know that happens plenty in the NBA, you get the idea.

You're just mad the Smelltics couldn't do it.
$ figures aren't critical to the concept? PUH-leeze... That's what happens
when your GM is a moron (you can relate as a Smelltic fan). Payton would've
re-signed with Milwaukee if his agent coulda gotten Herb Kohl on the phone!
Damn, how bush league can the Bucks get? Payton fell in Kupchak's lap. His
agent also said that the Heat could very well have had him if they even made
the moderately strong overtures.
Malone was more of a serendipitous acquisition. Stockton had to have
retired or he would've stayed. He said on ESPN in 1997 that he would love
to play for the Lakers because Shaq would prolong his career and magnify his
abilities. Seems the Kings, Spurs, and Smelltics weren't paying attention.
Gotta come up with something jucier than LA to take Malone East or to
another small market.
Me rikey nex year Lakas.
Junta sends his regards.
I'm not an angry man, Chris. We've still got 2 titles on you and I haven't
had to watch Antoine Walker play in a basketball game for quite some time
now. Why should I be angry? Would I rather Malone had gone to the Celts?
Sure. But angry, no. We've drafted well and appear to be going full speed
ahead for the first time in quite some time.
I'll oversimplify this, as apparently you didn't get it the first time
around. The Lakers are not preparing for this season by getting a savior
draftee or conducting a blockbuster trade. Their strategy was/is to stack
their lineup with big name free agents from other organizations. This
approach is known as buying a championship, regardless of the money or lack
thereof that the players will be recieving. While you and your bandito
buddies are coronating the 03-04 Lakers as NBA champs, I'm simply advising
you that while this approach has worked in the past, it is by no means
automatic. In fact, many teams have had this sort of approach blow up in
their faces.
And I do this because I care. The last thing I need to have hanging on my
head when I go to sleep next June is some wacky news story about a bunch of
Laker fans driving their cars off of bridges because they didn't win the
title. There, I've done my part.
Don't worry. Barring an injury to Shaq (ain't that always the case?), the
Lakers are a virtual lock to win the title. Why?
1. Sacramento's best ever team (2002) couldn't beat LA (w/o GP & KM) when
the series boiled down to a nut check. That won't change. Vlade's another
year older, Bibby hasn't earned his superstar paycheck, Christie cannot
guard Kobe, and you can set your watch to Webber's next knee or ankle
injury.
2. SA will not be able to replace Robinson. He did a good job of containing
Shaq (by holding him to 27 ppg and 15 rpg...). They're looking at
Nesterovic to fill his shoes. Sheeeit... Willis will be playing Shaq in
the playoffs for long stretches if that happens. No Dave-O is going to be a
major blow to SA's chances of repeating. Contrary to popular belief, Parker
doesn't run rings around Payton either. The Spurs can also ditch their Kobe
rules now that LA now has 2 more players who aren't retarded offensively.
3. Dallas couldn't beat the Lakers last year, much less now. Cuban was
pissed at Zo for going to NJ. Apparently, Zo didn't want to be the only
power player on the team in the Western Conf. Can't blame him.
4. NJ isn't going to beat LA either. I still doubt they'd beat Sac or SA or
Dallas for that matter. They've essentially added Zo to the mix. If Zo is
healthy enough to make it to the Finals (big IF, but NJ will make it there),
he won't provide any more defense on Shaq than Mutombo did in 2001. Zo's a
natural PF.
5. Minnesota might've had something pretty nice if they got Juwan Howard.
That fell thru. They'll be the 5 seed next year and will have to once again
withstand the fury of LA, Sac, SA, or Dallas in the first round. Sad, but
true, they won't advance to the Semis again.
Do you really think any of these main challengers will beat the Lakers? If
so, please explain how...
(snip)
The only problem is that the NBA isn't played on a video game console, and
numbers don't always equal championships.
We'll see I guess.
MF
Numbers don't but superstars do (with very few exceptions). LA's got 2
superstars and 2 borderline superstars.
Anyway, nice dodging the main question of who could take out LA. Couldn't
think of a team to do the job, I guess.
If anyone in here doesn't make them an odds-on-favorite to win it all,
they've got green blinders on. I don't see how - barring injury -
that team does NOT go all the way. If so, then they deserved to be
ridiculed, but we'll have to wait until May or June to find out.
Well, for one thing, Malone and Payton are big fat losers. They
haveboth cracked, wilted and stank under past pressure to win a
championship.

You know, I have watched many a post in many a thread go by with people
arguing back and forth over who has the most titles ever...which team is the
best...blah blah blah...
As a Celtics fan, I am proud of our history, and I cherish the titles the
team has won. But rubbing 16 flags in the face of Lakers fans, to me, seems
kind of dumb. The Lakers have won 5 titles since our last title, and they
are a hell of a lot closer than we are this year.
Being as most of the people in here probably were not around for the first
10 ro so titles, or the Minny titles for the Lakers...who cares?
Face facts...the Lakers are the better team right now. Doesn't mean there
can't be a bit of a rivalry...doesn't mean you have to like the Lakers...but
facts are facts.
Throwing the "16 titles" taunt around is kind of like Yankee fans and the
whole "1918" thing. It doesn't matter to them, and is not really relevant
to the conversation at hand.
I think the point you may have missed is that just about anyone, minus a few
teams, could take out LA. Until you actually see how these 2 superstars and
2 borderline superstars mesh and play together in an offense that is fairly
intricate, you can't go making such assumptions. This will be the first time
the two borderline superstars will be 3rd and 4th options, nevermind 2nd...
If you want me to actually name names, the usual suspects I suppose- San
Antonio, Sacramento, NJ, Dallas, Minnesota, maybe even Portland.
MF
All of what you said is agreeable. That said, I still think that San
Antonio has the ability to beat LA. They won't be able to replace Robinson,
but then again he was only marginally above the level of role player in
2003. Tim Duncan has proven time and time again that he is the man in the
NBA. Parker has some significant experience under his belt and will be all
the more polished next season. Ginobili looks like he could be the
notorious clutch shooter for the next generation.
At this point, the Lakers would have to be the favorite based on their
offseason moves. But the Spurs are the champions, in spite of the many ways
that your boy Fletcher has tried to downplay that fact. They beat the
Lakers on their way to said title. Everybody knows what the Spurs can do.
It's the Lakers that have things to prove, in my opinion.
For starters, Malone has made no bones about the fact that he's playing to
break the scoring record. How are all these ballhogs going to get along?
It's a long season Chris.
That's when they were the main guys. Actually both have gone to the
championship game. Can't say anyone is a loser if they made it to the
championship games. In any event they won't have to be the main guys this
time. They'll be playing with two guys and a coach who have won many times
already. So the pressure is off.

Only an ignorant observer would characterize Malone or Payton as borderline
superstars. Esp. Malone, who defines the PF position.

Well, keep in mind that I was using his description. I tend to agree with
you. Both could be 'the man' on any other team in the league.

Minnesota showed that all you need is a couple of unexpected players to get
hot in 4 games, and you've got a shot...albeit they lost, but with just
Garnett and Hudson doing anything, they came close.
Again, it should be interesting to see how 4 premier players will fit into
the triangle. I don't think it'll work, but if I'm wrong, it won't be the
first time.
MF
Yep. The whole Laker invulnerability thing is a myth.
Consider that in 2002, the Kings came within an eyelash of beating the
Lakers. You can argue all day about refs and fouls and so on, but at
the end of the day a 112-106 win in overtime is incredible close.
In 2000, of course, the Trailblazers had to collapse before the Lakers
could win.
The only really dominant playoff performance we've seen from the Lakers
this decade was in 2001 -- and don't get me wrong, it was really
impressive. But I don't think you can really say they've been a dominant
dynasty overall. They peaked in 2001, and went downhill from there, and
I don't see any reason to assume that Kobe and Shaq will return to 2001
form in 2003.

Semantics, but I don't think Malone and Payton are still superstars due to
age and erosion of their physical abilities. They also most likely won't
put up superstar numbers in LA. Shaq and Kobe probably will.
They cracked, wilted, and stank under past pressure to beat Michael Jordan.
In that respect, they're far from alone.
Bear in mind that Kobe and Shaq once had that "BFL" tag.
Shaq is going to DE-stroy the Spurs with Rasho as his counterpart. Sac,
imo, has taken back the reins as the leading challenge to LA.

Sure. Malone and Payton are so unproven and green that there's no way in
hell they can pick up an offense which Shaq and Kobe learned on the cuff.
Strike two!

Minnesota and Portland... :rolls eyes: Strike three! Yer out.

Robinson wasn not marginal when it came to defending Shaq. Rasho has a 5
rpg average career. I don't have his ppg average, but I bet it's under 10.
That's SA's weakest link. Did you happen to catch what Shaq did to Rasho in
the first round? Pretty big loss there by SA.

And? The Lakers have had a lot of recent practice in proving superiority
over the league.

I've read Malone interviews where he says that's not the case. He has to
average 24.5 ppg to break it this year. He wouldn't do that on -any- team.
Two years, 12 ppg and the record is his.
> It's a long season Chris.
For LA's opponents, you mean.
On the cuff???
Kobe STILL doesn't play within the triangle.
Regardless, both Payton and Malone are going from offensive sets where they
were the focal point, to an offense where when it's working properly, there
is no focal point.

False.

If that's true, then the tri was broken in Chi and is broken in LA because
MJ, Pippen, Shaq, and Kobe are clearly focal points of the offense.

I agree smacdo. Garret's really a bummer to this ng in the above regard.
wasn't Shaq going to destroy robinson and rose in last year's playoffs?
Of course they are not **still** superstars.

In 2002, the Kings got an edge in the middle games by poisoning Kobe. If
that hadn't happened, the Lakers would have won in 5
games. In 2000, The Lakers forced the collapse of the Trailblazers.
You're just a rank Lakerhater.
And yet, who ended up three times champs? After all is said and done, no
matter how difficult the series, the Lakers still came out on top three
times in a row.
Sure. But they didn't dominate three times in a row. I don't want to take
anything away from the achievement, I just want to note that people who
think the 2001 postseason performance was typical are fooling themselves.

YES HE DID PLAY WELL IN GAME 1 OF THE PHOENIX SERIES AND GAME 1 AND 6
OF THE FINALS, BUT I DISAGREE WITH THE STATEMENT THAT HE HELD SHAQ TO
THOSE NUMBERS. IF YOU DON'T RECALL THE REFS TOOK ROBINSON OUT OF
NEARLY THE WHOLE LAKERS SERIES. MUCH OF THAT DEFENSE WAS FROM MALIK
ROSE, WHO PROBABLY GAURDS SHAQ AS WELL AS ANYONE DESPITE HIS SIZE.
ROBINSON ONLY AVERAGED 21 MINUTES IN THE LAKER SERIES... DON'T BE
CONFUSED ABOUT THE FACT THAT ROSE AVGS ABOUT A MINUTE LESS THAN
ROBINSON, BUT HE'S THE ONE ON THE FLOOR TO FINIS THE GAME. RASHO
NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO HANG IN THERE AND JUST BE A BODY FOR A LITTLE
WHILE, AND MALIK WILL FINISH THE GAMES LIKE LAST YEAR. SHAQ TORE UP
RASHO IN THE PLAYOFFS? YOUR PROBABLY RIGHT, BUT IF I'M NOT MISTAKING
THE WOLVES THROUGH UP A DAMN GOOD FIGHT AGAINST LA WITH RASHO THERE,
AND THEY DON'T HAVE THE ROLE PLAYERS, NOR AS GOOD A TEAM AS SA. I'M
NOT SAYING THAT SPURS WILL BEAT LA, BUT DON'T SAY THE TROPHY IS
GIFTWRAPPED AND ON IT'S WAY TO LA RIGHT NOW. LIKE LEBRON JAMES, HE
HASN'T PLAYED A MINUTE OF NBA BBALL YET, DON'T HYPE TOO HIGH TILL HE
DOES IT AGAINST NON-HIGHSCHOOLERS (WHICH HE PROBABLY WILL)--DON'T HYPE
THIS LA TEAM AS THE BEST EVER, TILL THEY LEARN TO MESH TOGATHER AND
PLAY WITH 4 LARGE EGO'S ON THE FLOOR... SPURS AREN'T FINISHED YET, AND
COULD STILL PICK UP A PIPPEN OR SOMEONE LIKE THAT THAT COULD PLAY A
MAJOR ROLE AS VETERN AND LEADERSHIP... DUNCAN LIKE KOBE IS ONE OF THE
MOST FIERCE COMPETITORS IN BASKETBALL, AND IS UP FOR ANY CHALLENGE...
BRING ON THE GAMES, NOT THE GIFTWRAP
Are you implying that Shaq WON'T destroy Nesterovic?

I didn't imply anything more than that in the first place.
LA won the series by 17.5 ppg. Is that close or are you stupid?

You probably think the Lakers are the same team that they were in 2002 and
03, don't you?

Yep. In that regard, they were very reminiscent of the 60s Celtics who won
an astounding amount of close playoff games that could've gone either way.
>> In 2000, of course, the Trailblazers had to collapse before the Lakers

Lakers made them collapse. Team defense lead to 13 straight Portland
misses. It didn't just happen due to LA's divine luck. They also needed to
wipe away the 15 pt deficit on the offensive end.

You probably think the Lakers are the same team that they were in 2002 and
03, don't you?
Cap lock key = works
Return key = stuck
No, that would be fairly stupid. I also don't think that Kobe and Shaq
are the same players they were in 2001.
And you know that of course, because you went back in time and
unpoisoned Kobe, and then saw that the Lakers won in 5, and then you
went back in time, and repoisoned Kobe. Please, that was 2 seasons ago,
and you are STILL complaining about it! Kings fans and Lakers fans...
please stop talking about 2002! It was over a long time ago!
Eric
That seems a little harsh. But there are other ways.
For another, we have no idea whether Shaq will report in shape. Or
even whether his mistreated-for-a-decade body will hold up if he does.
For another, we have no idea if Kobe will be doing time or playing
ball. Or, if the latter, what effect both shoulder and knee surgery
have on his game.
Then's there are the injury possibilities, the high risk of ego
implosion, the fact that they still don't have a bench and now
have two fossils in the starting lineup, etc.
They have to be the odds-on favorite....but there are a LOT of
ways this team can fail to go all the way.
