Eliminating salary cap and other extraneous considerations, would you trade Ron
Mercer for Kobe Bryant?

There's no way in hell that I would. Personally, I think Kobe's overrated due
to the hype machine that is L.A. I also think that he gets alot of attention
because he came into the NBA out of high school. But if you look at his game,
it isn't all that special. So what if he can jump through the gym and produce
highlight film dunks? Have you seen Mr. Mercer the past few games? There's some
quality dunks if that's what you want.

Mercer has the better overall offensive game. He's much more of a pure shooter
than Kobe. Bryant's more of a chucker. I will give Kobe this - he does have
better range as a shooter. Mercer has yet to show (or even attempt to show) he
can shoot the three. Maybe this will come with time or maybe it's something
that isn't part of his game. Either way, I'd take Mercer over Kobe any day of
the week.

The media hype for Kobe is related to the Lakers being one of the
big market teams. In the big money sports, most everything can be
understood from the view that TV is running the show.

Yes, Kobe is very overrated. I live in LA and see nearly all of their
games. Even though it sucked to see NBC hype up Kobe so much during the
All-Star Game, it might work out well for everyone. It seems that his
head has blown up immensely since then. I do still contend that the
trade of Kobe from Charlotte to LA for Vlade is one of the worst in the
history of the NBA, but I do not fear that Kobe can let his team down
many times in the future.

Beat LA!

Mercer in a heartbeat...

Honestly, I'd say it's a toss-up. Kobe's also a good kid, so is Mercer.
They both are human highlight reels. They're both young. The only thing
that will settle this argument is time itself.

Although it's a toss-up, I'd prefer to have Mercer, just because seeing what
he did at college, I know he can still get to greater heights. Kobe may be
reaching his peak, I don't know, because I can't stand the Lake Show.

Once Mercer gets more comfortable, I still believe he can score 27-29 pts. a
game, which I stated weeks ago, and was lambasted.

Back in 1990 we drafted a pretty athletic kid. Won the slam dunk
contest he did. Wonder what ever happened to that guy?

I agree with everything you said about the LA media machine. And you're
right, Mercer shows more skill, Kobe shows all highlight reels. Mercer can
make his own too.

Helz...maybe we could send this to NBC before they make us listen to
another "pasing the torch" thing like the all-star game, reason alone to
hope those two teams don't make the Finals....Puh-leez, Kobe the next
Mike--Hey NBC, watch the game, not the highlight reels.

Hey Sully. While we're at it, we can also send NBC a complaint about Isiah
Thomas as an announcer. All this guy does is repeat what Bob Costas says, but
in a less eloquent manner. I never thought I could hate a color commentator
more than Quinn Buckner.

I'll sign that complaint. Amazing how a guy who can't speak English well, gets
a job as a commentator.

Somebody, please send Isiah a grammar book.

Great post! I like them both a lot. you have to agree that Kobee will be a
force for years, and has more aggressiveness. But Mercer is my guy!

They may give us the former Bird/Magic wars we loved in another 2-3 years.

I haven't been watching network basketball, but your comment reminds me of
an interview conducted with Isiah Thomas around the end of the 93 season, I
think. He had just received his degree fom IU and was being asked about
what happened to his Pistons in the season that had just ended. I had to
think for a few moments when he replied that his team had "surcame to too
many injuries." A different dialect is not a speech or language disorder,
but announcers usually strive, sometimes with training, to adopt a
mainstream speaking pattern.

He drives me so crazy, I almost wish he'd go back to Toronto....wait is he
that bad?

Funny reference here, because it's true. Every comment he makes is either,
"Yeah, what Bob said." or "Well, when I played I......"

High time we get a qualified guy with some talent instead of Mr.
Popularity.
