Two Classes of MLB Teams

structure of the teams. The large market teams have a decided advantage
over the rest of their various divisions. The NFL and the NBA have much
better revenue sharing rules than baseball. Baseball's lack of decent
revenue sharing results in two big divisions in both Leagues. The haves and
the have nots. For the most part the large market teams are the haves, the
rest of the teams are really a new type of farm system for the large market
organizations. Let's call them what they are, a new level of the minors
leagues, AAAA level, a step above AAA, and they play in the same divisions
as the large market teams that they develop players for. Most must sell off
the better players to stay financially afloat and go through the guise of
competing with the large market group.
You don't believe me, we'll just look at one of those large market teams
that has bought a pennant this year, the Yankees. The only thing Yankee
management and ownership has over the other teams is more money. Other
teams develop players, and the Yankees then buy the better ones. I've
stopped paying for tickets to this farce. It's almost as bad as watching a
bull fight - you know the outcome in advance. When the competition is
skewed, it's no fun.

and here's why:
Pettitte, Joba, Hughes, Robertson, Rivera, Aceves, Coke.
Show me another team with 7 of their 12 pitchers that all came up
from their farm system.
Jeter, Cano, Posada, Melky.
Show me, say, 6 teams that have 4 of their starting 9 hitters
who all came up from their farm system.
So you're whining about CC, AJ and exactly who else
on the Yankees' pitching staff? And AJ hasn't exactly
been stellar this year at 10-8 with a 4.10 ERA.
You're whining about Teixeira, A-Rod, Damon, Matsui
and Swisher? A-Rod and Swisher were obtained in trades
which is about as traditional as apple pie. Damon and
Matsui have both been less than stellar throughout
most of their contracts. Now that they are having a good year
for once, now you whine. A-Rod is having his worst year
ever most likely due to his hip surgery. Granted, his worst year
is better than most 3Bmen. Still, if the Yankees hadn't
traded for him, the Red Sox would have and then you'd
be completely quiet.
So, basically, you are whining about Teixeira and CC and
nothing else. Now go back and count the free agents on
every other club -- especially those that have won the
World Series for the past eight years. You'll find a hell
of a lot more players on those teams that were NOT
brought up in their farm system.
Nevermind that the 2004 Red Sox were built on
Manny Ramirez (a $160 million free-agent) and Schilling (a trade)
and Ortiz (a trade). Take the 2005 Chicago White Sox --
they had at most five players on that club who came up
through their farm system. And wasn't it you who whined how
"Other teams develop players"? Yeah, sure.
Whatever bullshit supports your whining.

Lao, how old are you? I got the feeling I'm debating with a kid and a
Yankee fan. Didn't the Yankees buy a very good pitcher the Indians
developed but couldn't afford to keep? Aren't the two largest market teams
in the playoff for the American League? Did I say all the Yankee players
were developed by other teams? Let's face it, the most important factor in
being a frequent playoff team is money, and the small and medium market
teams are at a great disadvantage with teams like the Yankees, Dodgers,
Boston, Angels, etc., having the ability to toss money at players in
ludicrous amounts. I rarely go to games anymore because I don't want to
contribute to the perpetuation of this unfair MLB farce.
