Yes, it was due to 9/11, and yes the media was plugging Jeter as Mr.
November.

As I said during the frigid 2004 playoffs, global warming actually
results in even colder episodes. Though the overall trend is warmer,
the number of severe cold snaps is higher. The 2006 postseason was
also cold. October 2000 was cold in STL also.

The first half of October in St. Louis as well as most of the Midwest
has been brutally cold. Highs have been in the 40s most days this
week in STL.

Regarding the 2001 delays, I remember going on a hike on the last day
of the regular season. On the drive to the park there was heavy
frost.

On another thread I mentioned the idea of eliminating the first round
of playoffs, allowing the World Series to end in October. Four
divisions of seven teams each, with only the division winners making
the postseason. Fewer days off in the playoffs. World Series is Sat-
Sun at one park, Tue-Wed-Thu at the other, Sat-Sun for Games 6 and 7
as in 1985 and 1987.

More teams in the playoffs certainly allows for a shorter season.
After all, only the top 8 teams need to be determined, not just the
top 4 or 2.

Inter-league games could be elimianted but not replaced. That reduces
the season by what, 2 weeks?

However, it also means there'd often be no rooting interest from mid-
September on.

The ugly truth is that the playoffs add a month of tedium to mostly
disinterested fans and the baseball season tends to slowly whimper out
in the cold and wet of mid-autumn...
