Does Arroyo have power in the minors? So far in 2 mlb games he looks
like a singles hitter to me. Of course, it's just 2 games, and game #2
is against Mr. Kershaw, so it's too soon to tell.

Not a power guy. Most HRs he hit in a minor league season is 9.

Naturally, he hit one out shortly after I asked the question. :-)

But the ball barely went out, and it was against Romo, so it almost
only counts as half a HR. ;-)

Boch batted him 5th, so I thought he must have some power. I guess
Boch is just trying anything now.

So no power, average speed, and it doesn't appear he's a magician with
the glove either, so he better has a high BA/OBP.

390 feet from home plate says he's got enough power. It's nice to get one home run from a Gants' bat. Then Morse? It's nice to feel like they have a chance win. :)

Why did they draft him then?

You know who was drafted after Arroyo? Aaron Judge.

You're asking me? Haha. Wish I knew the answer. He probably did
something right in college. And it's too soon to tell. Let's wait a
few months. Panik sucked for a while before he started hitting.

Wow. 10 HRs in April? I don't think the entire Giants starting lineup
has 10 HRs. LOL.

Some guy playing for the Nats not named Harper just hit 3 HR, went 6
for 6, and drove in *10* runs today! Where can we get one of those???
It could take us a week to score 10 runs!

BTW, how's Adam Duvall doing these days? The Giants thought they hit
the jackpot with Duffy and traded Duvall away. LOL. Boy did I get
that one right! I said Duvall could kill it at Cincy, and he's killing
it alright.

Rendon wasn't hitting much but he was the #6 pick of the draft a couple
of years ago.

So Rangers must have had a real down year a few years ago.

Giants haven't drafted in the top 10 this decade. It appears the drafts
in the last decade -- for Posey, Lincecum, Bumgardner and others --
netted 3 WS titles so hard to complain about that.

I guess those lean years after Barry left paid off about a decade later.

But where the Giants have struggled is getting something out of those
mid-round and late first round picks turning into gems. I think the
Dodgers pulled a couple of those.

I was looking at the MLB drafts wikis and saw that Stratton was a first
round pick a few years ago as well.

We can only hope they try to supplement their drafts with players from
the international market more, as the Dodgers and other teams have done.

Giants are never going to have the money that the Dodgers have and I
can't blame the team's spending in free agency the last couple of years.

I can't fault them for instance for not signing Cespedes, who ended up
signing for 4 years and $110 million from the Mets. But Cespedes is
only hitting .270 with 6 HRs and 10 RBIs so far but with .992 OPS.

Oh well, the team can't hit any worse, so far .230 as a team.

They were in last place in 2014.

Well, all 3 were top 10 picks. Gotta admit they took a gamble on
Lincecum but it paid off tremendously. Though yes, even top 10
picks aren't sure things, so they did very well there, hitting the
jackpot 3 times.

More like 3-4 years. Those were '06-'09 picks, and they won in
2010.

Yeah they didn't do well in mid to late 1st round picks at all.
Well they did get Panik at #29 but that's about it. They did pick
some gems from later rounds picks though. Crawford was a 4th
rounder, and Belt was a 5th rounder.

I still think the international market is tougher and more gamble
than you think. Not that many of them really panned out. And the
richest teams have a big advantage.

If they're gonna spend that kind of money, might as well try for
Harper. :-)

This could be the worst hitting OF in history.

I'm talking about all the big name prospects who attract bidding wars.

But yeah it's more risky than signing free agents who got proven records
in the MLB.

We can only wish. He's probably going to go to the Yankees or Red Sox,
depending on which one of them has a disappointing year. Or maybe the
Dodgers.

These teams have huge TV contracts so they can pay $40 million a year or
more.

It's probably why more often than not they also tend to end up
getting the top international prospects. Or other teams have to
break the bank to outbid them.
