Woo-hoo! With the money the Mets give us for Santana, we can now afford
Reggie Sanders! Reg-gie! Reg-gie! Reg-gie!

Although, sarcasm aside, at this point I might welcome Sanders for cheap.
If he signs a one-year, incentive based contract, he'd be a good platoon
mate for Rios. Even in his dismal 2000 season, he was above-average against
lefties. Grasping at straws, I am...

What's up with the weird drafting system, 10 Major leaguers,
30 AAA, and 10 AA?!?!?

The Giants signed him earlier in the off season as a minor league free agent
from Pawtucket of the Red Sox organization.
He never actually played for the Giants but is 11-21 in 123 Major League
appearances mainly with the Expos, Devil Rays and Red Sox.

It's not all that weird. Everyone has the -chance- to draft, but most
teams don't, because they don't think there's anyone worth taking, given
the requirements of the Rule V draft.

Didn't we get Chris Brock - and thus Bobby Estallela - via Rule V from
the Padres?

Brock was a minor league free agent. Thanks, Phillies!

Of course, with the Meluskey trade, it's painfully obvious that mediocre
pitchers are worth more than young, slugging catchers.

Nope. Brock was a minor league free agent from the Atlanta system. The
Rule V draftee from the Padres you're thinking of is Dave Maurer, who did
so well in spring training that the Giants returned him to the Pads.
