finally, if by some miracle it were not to be named "target field"/"general
mills stadium"/"3M park," what would you call it?
personally, i'd like a downtown mpls stadium with tons of adjacent parking
(parking is one thing the metrodome does right). retractable roof.
nice big asymmetrical outfield, nothing approaching comerica but no minute
maid, i dunno, maybe 330/375/410/350/315 with a raised right-field wall, a few
nooks and crannies here and there where the outfield wall has corners and
alleys. hand-updated scoreboard in said right-field wall. foul territory at
absolute minimum, get the fans as close to the action as possible, let them
mess with opposing teams in the field. keep the i'd put the bullpen behind the
left-field wall, tiered with the home team on the upper tier further away from
the field and the away team on the lower tier nearer the field.
i thought it took some major balls to put that big flagpole and hill in
centerfield in houston, but something that outrageous actually is pretty cool.
tough one, i dunno, maybe a moat instead of a warning track. or perhaps a
flock of sheep in left field.
there would have to be some homerun tradition like the fireworks in anaheim and
the train in houston. i'd vote for a giant statue of paul bunyan and babe the
blue ox behind the right-field seats. paul swings his axe and babe moos when
the twins hit one out. too garish?
not sure what to call it, maybe "mondale place" or "ventura park"?

I've written this in other forums, but we all know that the new ballpark
will have its naming rights sold to the highest bidder. And recently,
much to the unhappiness of most Minnesotans, Dayton's changed its name
to Marshall Fields. So, I think a great name for the new stadium would
be "Marshall Field." It would make Minnesotan's forget about the name
Daytons, and it could also be a tribute to both Jim Marshall (a great
Minnesota Viking who belongs in the HOF) as well as Thurgood Marshall.
I've written Target Corp. with my idea, but they only said they'd think
about it. Anybody else got any better ideas?

Either do or do not have a roof. Retractable always feels like being in an
airplane hanger (except Seattle I hear). No roff is fine 5 of 6 months and there
aren't that many games that month.

I like large outfields and small territory myself. Though I'm not too particular
as long as there are some "quirks."

Outfield. None of this "down the lines" crap. I never did like it, always felt
like I was in a half ass plac watchng little league.
Though I admit standing "next to" players as they warm up is cool, so a viewing
area is always good.

If I knew of anything really good I'd be a stadium designer.
I know a couple minor league parks built the overhangs so almost all foulballs
come back to the fans in the seats. That's a plus.
Wide seats are good.
I don't like those "below ground" or on the field seats, but they sell well so I
don't get to bitch.

Puckett Park? (though recently that seems like a bad idea)

Have you been to Miller Park for an example of how a retractable roof is done
wrong? There are about 3sections during a Saturday or Sunday day game that get
sun the entie game on a beautiful day. Yick.

The retractable roof would be ideal, but somehow I don't see that
getting done with the extra expense. A simple outdoor stadium would be
fine.

Hmm ... haven't given that much thought. I like outfield restraunts
where you can sit at a table outside while watching the game. Hardly

Why would anyone ever build a stadium that will last 30 or more years around a
player (especially today).

My guess is that Bud and his puppetmasters will insist that it have a roof,
whether or not retractable, or else the Twins will have to agree to play
their playoff and World Series games in another venue (for example,
Milwaukee... which will always be empty at that time of the Year). As I
recall, one of the reasons that the Cubs finally got lights was Major League
Baseball advising the Cubs that if they did not put Lights in Wrigley, if
they made the playoffs, they would have to play in Comiskey Park.

of year than say New York or Boston?

hmmm. Remember that New York and Boston are "costal" and have slightly more
moderate climates. Of course, its not a lot colder than Chicago.... but I
suspect that Bud and Co are going to try to make a Dome a requirement of ANY
new Stadia which is not built in the South... in part to justify the
Monstrocity that is Miller Park and in part because it gives them another
chance to blackmail their communities....

Does it? At the time this happened, many playoff games were still played
during the day, and of course, playoff games COULD be played during the day
on weekends without any issue. The "real" reason for this was to provide
the Tribune Company with a "club" to use on the City of Chicago to get
lights for Wrigley. More of Bud and the puppetmasters hard at work pushing
around cities..

Even Series games were day games then? I don't remember and am too lazy to look
up the start times of the 86 Series.
