and in a related development
Twins have designated Boof Bonser for assignment.
So what does it mean that he is designated for assignment? What does
that do to his arbitration status? Is this one of those deals where
they have to move him in so much time or he becomes a free agent? It
must not have been an option to just refuse to offer him arbitration.
No?

Designated for assignment means that the Twins needed to get him off
the 40 man roster to make room for another (Pavano). It's a kind of
limbo for players. The Twins have 10 days (or is it 15?) to either
release him, trade him, or put him on waivers. If Bonser clears
waivers the Twins could send him to one of their minor league teams.
Not sure how it affects his arbitration situation. I think by
designating him for assignment means he does not have a contract, so
if he clears waivers he would be arbitration eligible. If they trade
him I suppose his new team would have to go to arbitration, unless
they can get him to sign a contract.
It seems to me the Twins are going to be able to avoid arbitration
with Bonser by either trading him or having him claimed on waivers. If
he clears waivers they can offer him a lowball contract (since no one
else wanted him). If he refuses he'd be released and become a free
agent.
