reds bring back hernandez

The reds entered the offseason with three obvious spots where they could
improve or give playing time to a younger player. It looks like they've
opted for a push at catcher.
That leaves shortstop and left field.

I don't know if it's
buyout + 2 = 3
or
3 + buyout = 4
and nobody has asked and told the public.
DDN says the Hernandez contract means the reds expected payroll right
now is exactly where it was at opening day last year. That's before
re-upping Gomes and any arbitration.

If the team declines the option, they have to pay the buyout, period. That
terminates that contract. The new contract is just that, a new contract. The
buyout money is already in Hernandez' pocket (or bank account or whatever) by
the time they sit down to talk about a new contract. He pockets that million.
He'll be paid $3 million for next season.
The new contract is one year, $3 million for 2010, with a $3.25 million option
for 2011 that vests only if Ramon plays in at least 120 games next season,
So in effect, he's getting $4 million, but that's still better from the club's
point of view than $8.25 million had they exercised the option. The Reds just
saved themselves $4.25 million with this little bit of maneuvering. One way of
looking at that is that the savings just covered Arroyo's $1.5 million base
salary increase for next year, Harang's $1.5 million base salary increase for
next year, and the $1 million buyout they paid Hernandez, and the Reds still
came out an additional $250,000 to the good (more than half the 2010 major
league minimum of $400,000 that they'll presumably be paying Hanigan).

Gomes, Nix, Burton, and Masset are the four guys who are eligible for
arbitration. FWIW: I'll be very surprised of Masset and Burton aren't offered
arbitration if the Reds don't sign them before that. I won't be surprised at all
if Gomes and Nix are non-tendered before they start the arbitration process.
The two free agents are Richar and Wells. My analysis FWIW:
Richar turned down a minor league assignment and elected to become a free agent.
Considering his .229 career BA and .281 OBP in the majors, I really don't expect
many teams to be lined up offering him a spot on a 25-man MLB roster, so he
might be back.
As for Wells, I think if he returns at all, it's on a minor league contract with
the obligatory invitation to spring training.

I agree with your commonsense version of events, but that's not always
how things are done.
Indeed today, C. Trent claims the 2010 portion of the contract is buyout
+ 2 = 3.

I'll be shocked if they bring Nix back on a major league deal.
I'll be a bit surprised if they don't bring Gomes back.

Getting Sutton and moving Frazier to second pretty much buried Richar
and then he got hurt and.....He's gone.
