Next April will be the 30th anniversary of the rant that shook
Cubsville. In another century, when virtually all other Cubs managers
will have been forgotten, Lee Elia will always be remembered and
commemorated every five years. The reason? Because he told the truth
as ugly as it was at the time and still is (however the fans in the
stands are far from the unemployed anymore).

You can google for the entire rant but today I want to highlight Lee
Elia's thoughts on rebuilding:

But you're stuck in a f*ckin' stigma of the f*ckin' Dodgers and the
Phillies and the Cardinals an all that cheap sh*t. It's unbelievable.
It really is. It's a disheartening f*ckin' situation that we're in
right now. Anybody who was associated with the Cub organization four or
five years ago that came back and sees the multitude of progress that's
been made will understand that if they're baseball people, that 5 and 14
doesn't negate all that work. We got 143 f*ckin' games left.
---------------------cut here-------------------

29 years later and we're saying the same thing.

That's great. Lee Elia's rant is one of the funniest short scenes I've
ever seen or heard. It's up there with the WKRP turkey drop or
Chuckles the Clown's funeral on Mary Tyler Moore. I had to listen to
it after reading your post.

Wasn't Elia also the guy who taught Sandberg how to turn on an inside
cripple?

Jim Frey is given credit for turning Sandberg into a power hitter.
