I was using Motzarella, but they been taken over by eternal-september. For
a free usenet news server go to

eternal-september.org

I'm using it right now, and it works fine.

Hi Claude,

I finally decided to check out your news server. They won't
accept my email address during the registration process. Maybe
they were being flooded with interest from ATT/SBCGLOBAL customers?

Thanks anyway,
Frank

I don't know why that would be the case, unless it's not your actual email
address. Try again.

Claude, it is refusing the entire domain. I did send them a
question asking why they wouldn't accept my email address for
registration. If I get an answer, I'll let everyone know.

I switched to motzarella around the time Claude posted about them. I
have since switched to eternal-september. I've had no problems either
way.

Yeah, but your email address isn't from sbcglobal.net. And
again, they aren't refusing me on an individual basis, they are
not allowing anyone to sign up that gives an sbcglobal.net
address. And so far nobody from there has bothered to answer my
question.

2009-07-10 19:41:40 [Update] AT&T mail addresses

As AT&T will terminate their Usenet service on July 15, 2009, please
note: AT&T mail addresses can not be used for registration with Eternal
September as we will not be able to send your registration information to
such mail addresses.

Note: This also applies to other domains handled by AT&T mail servers
such as Bellsouth, SBCGLOBAL, Prodigy etc. AT&T uses a very "creative"
blacklist and is utterly unresponsive to removal requests. Please do not
use AT&T mail addresses for registration. The registration page will
reject such addresses. Also, please do not send inquiries and questions
using AT&T reply addresses as AT&T mail servers will bounce all replies
to these mails.

So the best thing to do is to open one of the free webmail accounts
(Google, Yahoo, MSN) and use that address. I used my Yahoo account
rather than Comcast, who also recently dropped their news servers.

Thanks for the information. I will point out the following:
AT&T is ending its Usenet support, it is NOT ending its EMAIL
SERVICE. It's USENET support doesn't end until July 15th so even
if somehow this information had to be sent via USENET, they still
had a week to supply my registration information. I still get
tons of SPAM so I doubt that AT&T would reject their email to me.
And for all it matters, while my email address is from
sbcglobal.net, the service is actually supplied by Yahoo as a
part of SBC/A&TTYahoo.

So their reasons for rejecting AT&T addresses all sounds like BS
to me.

I think they're saying that AT&T rejects their email as spam, so if
they tried to respond to your registration, it wouldn't get through.
Thatds explain why they haven't replied to you, too. Anyway, like
Michael suggested, I'd just use yahoo or gmail or whatever and do it
that way.

John,

I have another option that I am going with. I find their
explanation to be unbelievable and if they can't work through
their supposed problems with AT&T, then I have little faith that
they would be a reliable host.

Thanks,
Frank

One of the problems with the free news servers is that none of them are
reliable hosts, unless you want to go through Google Groups (ugh).
eternal-september is probably as good as any, and if they start crapping
out, I'll find another one.

This is a site that might help you find some alternatives. Good luck.

Your registration information has to be sent by *EMAIL*, which will not
work with sbcglobal, att.net, prodigy and other mail services provided
by AT&T, as their mail servers reject mail from many sources, including
Eternal-September.org. Their web page

http://worldnet.att.net/general-info/521.html

has a reference to the Spamhaus and Symantec blacklists. Neither
Motzarella nor Eternal-September have ever been on these lists. You may
also look up Eternal September's IP address 188.40.43.245 on

http://www.dnsbl.info/dnsbl-database-check.php

which will show that it is *NOT* listed on *any* of the blacklists they
check. So it is obviously AT&T's own blacklist that causes these mails
to be rejected. As their listing policy is not published anywhere and
every mail provider can filter whatever they please (if it's accepted by
their customers), I have decided that Eternal September will not accept
any mail from these servers, as it is not possible to reply to these
mails. For a service like Eternal September it is essential to run a
reliable abuse desk. Legitimate complaints from AT&T customers, however,
can not be duely processed because AT&T will block replies, confirmations of
receipt etc, so the sender of such complaints will erroneously assume
that his legitimate complaints are being ignored by Eternal
September.AT&T's blacklist policy hence damages Eternal September's
reputation, which is not acceptable.

> I still get tons of SPAM so I doubt that
> AT&T would reject their email to me.

They do. This is from Eternal-September's server log:

You might want to ask your mail provider what other mail sources they
block without informing their customers.

Yahoo uses other mail servers and a different antispam policy. There is
no problem receiving mail from Eternal September to a Yahoo or Google
mail account.

False assumptions lead to false conclusions.

Look, it's just as easy for those people to get another email
address to send mail to AT&T customers as it is for me to get
another one. Since they cannot do that, I'm not going to either.
I don't think I want to deal with a company that apparently
feels it is okay to make my information publicly broadcast, i.e.,
their server log as you have quoted here. Have a good day.

Oh, and you might want to check out
http://worldnet.att.net/general-info/block_inquiry.html as to why
your company's email is blocked by AT&T.
