The Cubs are interested in acquiring Damian Miller from Arizona.

Miller is a consistent mid- to high-700s OPS hitter, and has a
reputation as a good defensive catcher. The bad thing is that he gets
hurt all the time.

He is arbitration eligible and likely to make about $3.5 million next
year. That's paying a premium for a catcher who averages about 100 games
per year, but one could do worse.

" Although the Diamondbacks are thin in the outfield and could use
another arm in the bullpen, they might settle for a pitching prospect in
return for Miller."

Well, yeah, I'll bet they would. I wouldn't give them anything decent
for him.

It will be a real shame if the Cubs have to go out and expend a good
prospect for a player like Miller, AND take on some other team's burden
in exchange for Hundley.

" As for the silly rumor the Cubs might send Corey Patterson to the
Marlins for third baseman Mike Lowell, sources say Hendry will not trade
Patterson, period."

I agree that that trade is ridiculous, but I'm disappointed if Hendry
has closed the door on the idea of trading Patterson.

David, consider the source here: Greenstein. Neither the Daily Herald
nor the Sun-Times report any of this stuff and Greenstein gets it wrong
way too often. I would tend to think that the Patterson part is true
because that is a consistent message from Hendry (though I suppose it
could also just be keeping the price high), but I wouldn't put much
stock in the Damian Miller business. My guess is that the conversation
went like this: Greenstein: What do you think of Damian Miller? Hendry:
He's a good player. Another reporter: what about the Patterson for
Lowell rumors? Hendry: Not a chance.

It doesn't mean that Miller is not on the radar screen, but until I hear
it from someone else I'm not going to put much stock in it.

The rumor that seems to be gathering steam, rightly or wrongly, is about
Pudge Rodriguez, about which I have profoundly mixed feelings.

I guess I won't either, beyond the fact that it IS a possibility that
makes some sense. If the Cubs can get Miller for a nominal pitching
prospect, II have nothing against the idea (beyond the fact that I think
they have over-reacted to the Hundley situation, of course).

I do too, and the recent free agent acquisitions for which I've had
similarly mixed feelings, from Moises Alou to Todd Hundley, certainly
don't make me feel any better.

A one or two year deal for Rodriguez might not be a bad thing, or a
longer-term deal that depended on performance in the first couple of
years with an escape clause for the team.

I don't either -- but what about the idea of trying to pry Chad Moeller away
from the Diamondbacks?

I'm pretty indifferent about that. Moeller hasn't hit much in some time.
He would not be a bad guy to have on the roster as a second catcher
though.

What I think the Cubs SHOULD consider is turning one of their other
prospects, perhaps even one of the better pitching prospects, into a
premium catching prospect. I don't know what it would take to get
someone like Victor Martinez, who was mentioned in another thread, but
I would like to find out.

Start putting some stock in it.
