It will be interesting to see how Ricketts moves ahead with the team. If
I were at the press conference (although they haven't invited me to one
yet), my questions would be:
1. Do you plan to bring in someone to oversee baseball operations?
2. What about the rest of the club management including the GM?
3. What will the budget be like for 2010?
4. What will be done to improve the organization in areas other than the
major league level? In other words, how will the drafting and
development of players be improved?
I doubt if either Hendry or Piniella will be dismissed, but I'm hoping
that someone is brought in to run the baseball side of things; someone
who Hendry will be held accountable to, especially in areas of budget
and spending. I also hope that this person will develop a new
organizational philosophy toward drafting and development of players
that will stress OBP and more advanced statistical metrics along with
"tools" and athletic ability.
I was excited when the Tribune bought the team, and I'm excited now. A
new era begins.

Ricketts loves Baseball and is committed to changing the Cubs
from a perennial loser/also-ran into a force with which to be
reckoned. Lou may not be a Leo-the-Lip kind of guy, but he is a
good manager and there isn't anyone in the managerial unemployment
line that is half as good as him.
As for Hendry, there are at least a few hundred members of SABR who
could do a better job.
The first three problems for the Ricketts are Scouting, Drafting, and
Player Development.

Which is why the Ricketts clan should have brought in someone to oversee
Hendry. In one manner or another Hendry has been in charge of the Cubs'
minor league and player development system for over a decade and there
hasn't been a whole lot to shout about.

Ricketts has said that Lou will stay, but I wonder how that will work
out since Lou has said that this will be his last year. I think I would
have felt better if Ricketts had just cleaned house and started over
with a new GM who would then hire his own manager.

Agreed. The Cubs need to draft and develop more disciplined players
instead of always going for the tools guys (Patterson, Pie, Vitters,
etc.).
