Average at best.

To Jim Hendry (as well as many Cubs fans), average is best.
If it's part of the dump-Milton deal, average may be the best you get.
Geez Louise, let it go already Mark.
And without knowing _anything_ about this interest, or even Cabrera,
let me interject some reality here...
Not every starter can be an all-star. No team, not even the Yankees
could afford that. Especially considering that you tend to over-pay for
all-stars.
Plus... every team needs back-ups and utility players. We saw last year
how much all the injuries to different players messed up everything
else on the team. Perhaps this is the role that is envisioned for
Cabrera. (again, I know nothing about him at all.)

I don't really understand why they seem to be so desperate to get a
centerfieder but Melky Cabrera seems to be a reasonable choice IF they
don't have to give up too much for him. He's 24 years old and seems to
be improving as a hitter. I certainly like the idea of him over
Granderson.

Granderson is now a Yankee, so the Yanks may be willing to deal Melky. No
telling what the Yanks would want from the Cubs though. On one sports show
the announcer was saying Theriot. I wouldn't be upset to see Ryan go if
that's what it took.
I don't consider Theriot to be any better than average, but if he goes,
who plays short for the next 2 years until Castro is ready?

Well, they had a report on the Tribune site that Piniella said something to
the effect that he wouldn't be afraid to start a 19 year-old at short, so
maybe the Cubs are setting the stage for Castro to take over this year. I
don't know if they have anyone else in the organization that is capable.
But at this stage he is untried. Hard to see a team with championship
aspirations going into the season with such an untried player at such a key
position. The only other option after Theriot is Blanco. Great fielder, but
can the Cubs afford to give up Theriot's offensive production? Unless there
is a shortstop in Hendry's trade calculations, Theriot will be back next
season.
Theriot for Melky sounds like a good deal for us. Good upside
potential, not much downside. It might also force the issue of
bringing Castro up to the majors. I'm sure he'll go through growing
pains but I'd prefer to seem him getting major league playing time
sooner than later.

Championship aspirations??? Soriano in left, Bradley in right, no
second baseman, a big question mark at catcher, no bench, etc., etc.,
etc
Besides all that, Theriot is nothing special as far as shortstops go.
Being forced to find a new starting shortstop may be a blessing in
disguise.

I didnt say they are a championship team. Your (and my) opinion is that
they are not yet that. However, they may become that---with some personnel
adjustments, fewer injuries, and performances closer to player potential.
Management does have those aspirations. And in the end, management decides
who plays. Until there is a player whom management feels certain can produce
at least as well as Theriot, I believe Theriot stays.
