Why did the Sox acquire Peavey & Rios?
I think that he aquired Peavy because he had a rotation where 2 of his
veteran pitchers had failed(Contreras and Colon) and 2 young pitchers
who were inconsistant. He might have felt that aquiring Peavy would
take the pressure off of the staff a bit in '09 alot in 2010 (
especially the young guys)
Rios on the other hand was aquired to fill the void in CF. One would
have to think that a player who was as good as Rios was for as long as
he was couldn't be that bad that quickly and maybe an empathetic
hispanic manager could turn him around quickly or maybe just a change
of scenery could help. Normally this is done after a down contract
year or by getting a load of $$ from the original club to pay the bulk
of the salary( a la Thome) but I'm not sure we got any cash this time.
I think I would have let them release him then signed him.
While this is not a great team this a team that CAN contend but alot
of things have to go right. The starting rotation has to be more
consistant and the bullpen needs to be shored up or bounce back for an
incredibley bad year. The SS has to have a better year defensively
than last as does the centerfielder. The position of catcher needs to
be addressed. (especially from a stopping the steal perspective) for 2
reasons. Firstly because the pitchers will be able to concentrate more
on the hitters and not feel they have to keep the runner standing
right on the base and secondly if I am the opposing manager, after
what I saw last year, everybody and anybody who gets on first is
running
Just my 2 cents
Jim
Salary wise let's remember that the Peavey, Rios acquisitions were
more than balanced off by the subtraction of Thome, Vasquez, & Dye's
salaries. Bobby Jenks will probably be dropped too and that's a
mistake IMO.
The SS is terrible defensively and I don't see him getting much
better. With Pods gone they are going to need to replace that speed
and leadoff position somewhere.
Regarding catcher I have mixed feelings. I agree that AJ can't throw
well, but with his hitting and his attitude he is an all around
positive IMO. Tyler Flowers I don't believe is ready even for part
time duty.

Unless the cash they got with Thome for Rowand and Gio Gonzales was
enough to pay the entire balance of Thome's contract ( not out of the
question as Thome had to go and if they released him the Phils were
still on the hook for the $$ anyway)
Bobby Jenks will probably be dropped too and that's a

Harrelson continually babbling about Thorton closing near the end of
last season and alot of times I think he sort of acts as a point guy
for KW.So my guess is you are probably right

But he was a shortstop in Cuba :-)

Not alot of speed on this roster but that can be overcome if we learn
to bunt and hit and run

I'm an old timer and adhere to the axiom that you have to be strong
up the middle defensively to win and with a feilding % of .995 ( which
doesn't even include the failure to attempt to throw out base
stealers. At one time when he was a bit better defensively i would have
agreed with you . I'm not so sure now
Jim
I don't think we really want to trade the only guy in the infield that
can actually field his own position. Teahan has had back problems in
the past but is ok now at tthird , Our shortstop had 20 errors last
year and is erractic on routine plays, and it is in the plan for
Beckham to learn his second new position at the major league level in
2 years Pretty much the last thing we need is an ex catcher learning
to play first
Jim
Get rid of your team captain to free up cash to get another catcher?
AJ's throwing arm may not be a shotgun, but I'd seen him knock down a
few bunnies and I was impressed.
Even with AJ's weakness in getting runners I still think he is a major
plus to the team.
Some of the pitchers can do a better job holding runners closer.
I'd thought the same thing - pitchers may not be doing enough to allow
AJ to stand a chance.
It's hard finding a good hitting catcher - and a person of AJ's
unselfish character.

He threw out less than 24% of base stealers and had a feilding % of
.995 . I am not
Jim
I take it you want to get rid of AJ. Who do you want to get to replace
him?
He brings more than just throwing out baserunners to the table which I
admit he is weak at.
I think I could have stolen off Jos. I wonder how AJ did with Buehrle
on the mound?
I'm not saying he isn't a plus to the team I am saying he is a minus
defensively.
We have 2 pitchers with 2 of the best moves to first base ( Buehrle
and Danks). The 2 most people bitch about when they are talking
holding runners were Contreras ( gone) and Freddie Garcia( hanging on
by a thread). I haven't seen Peavy enough to have an opinion on him
and Floyd while he isn't great seems to be real average.
Let him DH . He hits for pretty good average with occassional power.
This is certainly a step up from the previous years. Also have him
catch once or twice a week

You can make all the excuses you want for him but he is a sub par
defensive cathcher
>It's hard finding a good hitting catcher - and a person of AJ's

Thats why you make him a DH and let him catch once or twice a week
Jim
Don't want to get rid of AJ I just want a good defensive catcher
behind the plate. . Why not Miguel Olivo. He's good defensively, has a
gun for an arm, and hits for power. ( The downside is that he doesn't
hit for much average and strikes out alot. He should fit right in)
The difference between him and Josh Fields is that Olivo can actually
field his position. He is a free agent and should be reasonably cheap.
With only a few of the vets left I see AJ as a leader and a great
example for the younger guys. He could help the young pitchers and
provide a steady bat in the line up
Jim
I hate to answer my own post but nevermind on Olivo . His stats are
worse than AJ's but there has to be someone ( I was thinking of
someone like the guy who plays for Detroit. He doesn't hit well but
plays defense incredibley well
Jim
Regarding Olivo, if I remember correctly the pitchers didn't like him
much. I'm not sure why. I'm not against getting a good defensive
catcher, but right now I don't think that is the Sox' greatest need.
Relief pitching needs help especially if they get rid of Jenks. Even
if Bobby stays, and I hope he does, the Sox need relief help.
Linebrink is worthless and a replacement for Dotel is needed.
Speaking of defense, shortstop needs more attention than catcher IMO.
We have addressed the SS problem with the aquisition of Teahan. Now we
can only hope that our management folks are smart enough to put the
right people in the right spots ( good luck to us on that)
I agree with you about the bullpen needing a facelift. My only point
is that evertime we walk someone or give up a single we are in a
situation where that single ( or walk ) could very easily be a double
( by way of the stolen base) because or guy can't throw the ball all
the way to second with any degree of accuracy or consistancey. He had
trouble throwing out guys at 3d. There will be alot of people in
scoring position because of this. As I said before if I'm an opposing
manager anyone who gets on first is going to run, if we have a guy on
3d with good -to-great speed he is going to 3d
just my 2 cents
