Yesterday, during ESPN's coverage of the final pre-season NBA game for
both Lakers, during a break in the action, baseball came up. Van Gundy
said about the Yankees, "What's so impressive about opening up your
checkbook and signing all the best free agents?"

Didn't hear it, but good for JVG. Arte made a great offer to one FA
(Tex). He doesn't have unlimited funds to throw at every FA all-star
on the market. Arte wants to win, but he also needs for the team to
make a profit on a lot less revenue than the Yankees generate. Being a
SoCal native I can't imagine how someone would choose a $22.5 million
annual salary to live in the NYC cluster fuck over a $20 million
annual salary and live on the Newport coast.

NYC is an okay place.
I wouldn't leave Boston for it but I'd take it ovewr LA-LA land if those
were my choices..
