Nick Cafardo of the Globe tweeted; "The Mariners have until Thurs to
deal 1b/of mike carp designated for assignment last week. Twins,
Astros and Red Sox have some interest".

All batters released by Seattle...and all pitchers released by
Colorado...should get a close look.
Carp is a LHB who plays both 1B and LF...and plays them both badly.
The samples are small, but he has made 6 OF errors in 392.2 innings.
At that rate, he would commit 22 errors if he played all 162 games.
His splits are not what one normally would expect.
Has hit better in Safeco than away from it.

Has better numbers vs LHP than RHP
Vs RHP .241/.323/.398/.721
Vs LHP .300/.341/.462/.802
He has killed the Red Sox (in the 9 games he played against them)

Good four year AAA career. Seems like that's where he's best suited.

I liked the idea of Overbay as a backup, but they probably get more upside
with Carp considering their ages. You never know with a guy like this and
with his odd L/R splits (which I think point to a positive) he could turn
into something. Overbay is probably close to the end of his career. I
watched a few games Carp hit well in last season and he really puts a charge
in the ball when he hits it. Given also his OF experience he's got a big
edge.

The Red Sox can only carry 4 players on the bench. Ross has to be
one...a backup middle infielder is another. That leave 2 spots for
the LH part of the leftfield platoon, the backup OF, the backup 1B.
The aversion to playing Ortiz in the field (whether thats his choice
or the team's) does limit the Red Sox bench. Youkilis used to offset
this a bit, but I don't see any plans to have Middlebrooks backup 1B.

would love to see Carp live up to his potential. But he needs to show it in
spring training to win a job and a spot on this roster. I suppose you can
