My gold gloves for the AL:
1B: Teixeira (Youkilis could of won it if he played more time at 1B,
and the injury held him up this year)
2B: Jason Bartlett (He only had 26 errors in 2007, and he played the
entire season, he should of won it that year)
SS: Jeter (who else was there, really?)
3B: Chone Figgins or Longoria
C: Nobody (If it was up to me, I'd award it too nobody this year, since
the catchers were anemic in the AL this season, but you can't....
OF: Torii Hunter, Ichiro Suzuki, and not Adam Jones, somebody else for
the 3rd OF
P: Not Buehrle...somebody else
that Jeter wins it routinely shows it's become a bullshit award.
but then how can you make errors when you can't get to the ball.
"it's through the infield for a hit!"
That's an old one recycled for a year when his fielding percentage was
tops and his range factor has improved.
AJ
You really don't watch, or know, too much about baseball, other than hating
the Yankees, eh?
=======================================================================
he's slower and more limited than ever.
Don't get me wrong, I admire ol'Jump Throw. he bangs hot actresses and
babes, he seems like a pretty cool guy.
but he is not a great fielder.
Truth is, not all are as bad as Mr. O'Hara. There are some who appreciate
the game itself and give credit where credit is due, no matter who the team
is, as evidenced in this thread alone.
Ray once asked me, "Do you watch much baseball?" If that was supposed to be
some sort of retort, he has much more tortin' to do.
All Ray does, along with a few others, is find something dumb to say. But
I'll give him credit where credit is due... he's the best at being dumbest.
Statistically the Gold Gloves should have been:
1B- Mixed bag Youkilis was far and away the best first baseman this
year but only played 647 innings out of a possible 1436.2 innings.
According to the Fielding Bible he still saved more run than any other
firstbaseman.....according to RZR he reached more ball outside the 1B
zone (OOZ)than any other firstbaseman.....again while only playing 45%
of the possible innings at the postion. UZR/150 has him at
15.2...then next best is Kendry Morales is 5.0
That being said 1B is probably the toughest to rate statistically as
there isn't a way to track the saved throws from other infielders.
The winner should have been Kendry Morales
Lyle Overbay deserves honorable mention......as does Paul Konerko.
Miguel Cabrera had a better year than I would have expected as well/
2B- A lot of good candidates......Pedroia, Hill, Kinsler, Zobrist or
Polanco. Pedroia could easily have won this award....so could Hill.
The winner should have been Hill (by the narrowest of margins over
Pedroia). Polanco is not a bad choice...just not the best choice.
SS-No Red Sox here. Gonzalez did solidify the infield when he came
over but his time in Cinncinati was less than impressive. Nick Green
is going to go down in Red Sox memory as an inferior fielder but it
really isn't the case. His numbers indicate a much better than
average SS....not GG but pretty good.
The winner should have been Elvis Andrus. Its not a real strong
field Andrus made 22 errors but he still got to more balls than any
other SS.
Marco Scutaro deserves Honorable Mention.
Jeter does well in the Hardball Times RZR system but poorly in the
Fangraphs UZR/150 and Feilding Bible Plus/Minus ratings.
In some very amature studies I've done SS range is a young mans game.
Almost all SS (except the very very best...like Smith or Vazquel) stat
losing range as early as 27 years old.
3B When Mike Lowell came here in 2006 he was Gold Glove
Caliber.....in 2007 he was above average......in 2008 he was below
average.....in 2009 he may have been the worst in the AL.
Injuries?....for sure; Age?.....maybe.
Figgins...Longoria; Longoria....Figgins. The are 1-2 in every
matrix. The Fielding Bible gives Figgins a huge
advantage.....Figgins +40; Longoria +21. It's enough to give it to
Figgins.
Beltre deserves Honorable Mention.
OF Bay and Ellsbury did not have good years. Most people except
that Bay is a liability but some are convinced about Ellsbury.
Ellsbury has had good years in both 2007 and 2008.....maybe 2009 is
just a fluke. JD Drew is a very good RF.
The best CF in the AL......in baseball....in fact possibly the best
fielder in the entire game is Franklin Guitierrez and it ain't even
that close. Ichiro Suzuki is the best RF.....Carl Crawford is the
best LF. MLB doesn't seperate LF-CF-RF.......no idea why.
Honorable Mention Drew, Sweeney, Granderson, Upton......a bunch of
people.
C- Red Sox players are not eligible.
Rod Barajas is very good. Gerald Laird had a great year. Probably
the nod to Laird.
Mauer deserves Honorable Mention.

And guess who will be manager of the year, even though he had a $240
mil all-star team to manage. About a $120 mil more than the Phillies.
I don't know how anyone can be a Yankees fan even though I don't know
any true Yankee "fans". I always have tell my Yanks "fan" friends
when the games are on TV, etc... Give me a break! Something is
missing in their lives for sure
Good one Ray!
For that matter, how much after the ALCS.
It's official. Jeter and Tex = Gold Gloves.

Hmmm... Lets see...
2003 World Series
Marlins payroll - about 50 million or less
Yankees payroll - 164 million
Manager of the Year - Jack McKeon of the Marlins
> I don't know how anyone can be a Yankees fan
That's not all you don't know.
>even though I don't know any true Yankee "fans". I >always have tell my
>Yanks "fan" friends when the >games are on TV, etc...
With ESPN games and games on Fox, of course, nobody has ever said, "Hey,
when is the Sox game on?"
>Give me a break! Something is missing in their lives for >sure
I agree. What's missing in our lives is 86 years of nothing but 2nd place
finishes and laughable losses. I can give you 27 excellent reasons why we're
fans plus a history of legends. And when the Yankees lose, we're right back
the next season to support them no matter what.
Point of information - one of my closest frinds lives in Boston. He's an
avid Sox fan and he's one of the best people I've ever known. When the Sox
won their two WS, I called him immediately to tell him that I was happy for
the Sox and for him. He's nothing like some of you sore losers here.

I do, and to tell you the truth Jeter did look a lot better this year. For
the past few years I loved killing on his D but this year Jeter stepped it
up on O and D. I don't know if it was GG worthy but he definitely improved
this year.
The Fielding Bible agree's with you.
Jeter's Defensive Runs Saved numbers since 2004.
'Rank' is where he lists in 'Runs Saved' for all major league SS.
Runs
Year Saved Rank
2004 -12 32
2005 -26 34
2006 -17 34
2007 -26 34
2008 -8 31
2009 +4 15
He's a good guy and takes his Sox seriously, but there's a limit to how he
lets if affect his life. To balance the scale, he called me after Game 6.
He's just a good guy and we sure have some fun conversations about all this.
LOL!
