I think the record post 1900 is 15 steals by a team in a game.
See, Sarge? It could be worse.
....and it will be!
Never have assorted douchebags put more value on intangibles. It
surely is far from all Varitek's fault that there have been so many
SBs. But facts are facts. Can you remember Ivan Rodriguez' throws in
his prime. They were rockets usually on a line to 2nd base. Varitek's
are more like tennis lobs in the vicinity of 2nd base. Even when he is
one target often there isn't enough zip on the throw to get the
runner. He is a big minus at throwing out runners. Now, for the second
year in a row, he becomes a sub .200 hitter near the start of June. (A
little before last year, a little after this year). Thus he provides
no defense and almost no offense. But, ah, that "veteran leadership".
Beckett and Lester wouldn't know how to take a crap without Varitek!

Yet ask pitchers who they would prefer catch them, and I'm pretty sure Tek
would get most of the votes. I've heard more than once that Pudge has a
marked propensity to call for fastballs with baserunners on to help him gun
them down. No question he has the stronger arm...by a wide margin...but
there is more to being a good defensive catcher than that. I agree they
need to address the problem. I just don't think it's all the catcher's
fault. This is a team philosophy...and teams are taking advantage. Time
for a change of approach.
