clutchness? even salty knocked in a higher percentage of baserunners than martin did. defense? the numbers i've seen indicate that salty was better defensively. you're right though, martin did walk 15 more times than salty; he also hit into 8 more double plays. i have no opinion on grit. i'm no fan of salty, but martin is not an improvement, is older, and would cost more money.

the difference between a casual and real fan is that to the former the
thought that trading homers for walks is a good thing must sound insane
on it's face.

Salty has 60 more OPS points. Martin was once pretty good, back when
Gnork wanted to trde the farm for him. I don't know what happened, but
now he is a really poor hitter. I'm happy he's been playing for NYY.

@Nate: Catcher's definitely the toughest position to judge with
numbers. There seems to be much more that isn't easy to measure.
