The Yankees can only win championships when they buy them. When
baseball instituted the amatuer draft in 1965 and giving all teams an
even chance at signing players, the Yankees quit winning. When free
agency came along in 1976 the Yankees were once again able to use
their financial leverage to be a dominant team. Baseball has become a
parody of its ownself. The Yankees championship which was bought with
a financial advantage and God knows how many steroids will in my
opinion, always have an asterisk, just like the shallow fence in right
field that is only there to help A-Rod break the home run record. I
swear, a central American election has more integrity.

What a load of crap. I'm not happy today that the Yaks are champs again.
But they are. Get over it. They didn't "cheat". They definitely "bought"
and paid for it. They abused their own fans...the dumped their own historic
(sort of) baseball basillica for dough...then converted the cash into two
top starters that were the difference. Pure and simple. Everything they
did was well within the rules of the game. I may not like it...no...I DON'T
like it. But that's the way it goes. You win some (and we have) and you
lose some. So do they. All their money hasn't guaranteed their success.
Whatever our feelings about it...those players over there won it and earned
it. Now their fans...their owners...they can eat shit and die.

They could have done this long ago. They don't want to. The players don't
want it...most owners apparently don't either.

Sure. It could be. It won't be. I suggest you stop your crying and either
learn to that you lose sometimes in any sport. Take the bad with the good.
You keep your head up...pick yourself up and try again. If fans in the
other towns where the owners either can't or won't put a competitive team on
the field stop going...and if MLB let's some fail (why hasn't that happened
BTW?) then the market should solve the problem. Other teams can and do
compete with the big money teams. It's been shown time and again.
The Phillies COULD have beaten them. Their pitching generally sucked with
one or two notable exceptions. Many of their hitters choked as well. Too
bad. I wanted them to come back. Life goes on. Don't embaress yourself
and the rest of us with this childish asterisk bullshit.

I guess you really should just become an ex-MLB fan. But you might just as
well be an ex-sports fan altogether. They really aren't doing anything
wrong. Would it be "right" to simply keep raking in their huge profits and
NOT spend on the best players they could? Were the Red Sox and JH
"wrong"...unsportsmanlike...to go out and risk 100 million on an untested
Matsuzaka who had never pitched in an MLB game in his life? Just because
the $100M didn't count against the actual team payroll figure? Isn't that
just finding a loophole in the rules? The Sox go after and buy guys in
other ways...like this Cuban kid Iglesias that they gave 8 million to.
I can completely understand why fans in other cities would be disenchanted
with how baseball is run. I agree that it would be wise for some kind of
cap with minimums in place so cheapskate owners can't job the syatem and
fill their pockets. Those kind of owners are the ones that piss me off more
than the Steinbrenners. They put inferior teams out there and still benefit
from the leagues overall popularity.
Look. There is one thing we have to understand when it comes to the
Yankees. They will always have a distinct advantage no matter what. They
are, by far, in the biggest, richest city in America. Check out a NY
newspaper and look at prices for everything. Rents...property
values...everything is high. They have a fan base well over 10 million to
draw from. Their TV and radio revenues alone are off the charts. Of course
they'll always be at a distinct advantage. They are Goliath to everyone
else's David. It's really amazing that they aren't MORE successful on the
field. But it makes it ten times sweeter when you bump 'em off too. One
thing they must live with...they will NEVER be the underdog. Most be people
love the underdog.

Yep. He wanted all players to be free agents every year. No multi-year
contracts. As you know, Marvin Miller knew full well that Finley had a
good point and was afraid that the other owners would listen to him.
Instead they pushed for a period of exclusivity to "protect their
investments," and Miller essentiually duped them into accepting six
years, making the owners think that was a concession on the part of
the union. It's as if Miller and Finley were the only guys who
understood market economics.
