Interesting. But I question the premise that "While the Red Sox have plenty
of quality prospects in the minor leagues, none appear to be on the cusp of
making a significant impact in the majors in 2013". The writer then goes on
to mention a few who actually COULD. Top of that list for me is Jackie
Bradley Jr. I know it's early...but his early showing makes for an
interesting opportunity. If he continues to show he's ready, this could
open the door for a big trade possibility. If Ellsbury demonstrates his
health and plays well, could he bring a good return? I still wouldn't move
him for pennies on the dollar...but given the right package it could be the
time to make such a move. If not...they could still upgrade and limit the
roles of the "new guys". Good situation in that they don't HAVE to make a
trade. Always better for bargaining.
But those three pitchers mentioned should give us the greatest reason for
optimism here. No telling how high the bar is for De La Rosa, Barnes and
Webster...but I like the chances of substantial contributions from at least
a couple of these guys...sooner rather than later. This in my opinion, was
a big reason for acquiring a solid, veteran, defense first catcher like Ross
to be added. He can help mentor these pitchers as well as Salty...even
Lavarnway while he's around. That was missing last year in that zoo they
had here. I really don't think Shoppack was that guy for them. He added to
that bad atmosphere...didn't help from what I've heard. I just always got
the sense he was a me first kind of guy.

It's really an impressive group.
I'd say three have a chance to be impact players
SS Xavier Bogaerts
CF Jackie Bradley
SP Matt Barnes
...4 who should be major league regulars during long careers.
SP Rubby De La Rosa
SP Allen Webster
LF Bryce Brentz
3B Garin Cecchini
...5 who could be starters at some point in their careers, but should
at least be on a 25-man roster for a few years
C Blake Swihart
SP Henry Owens
SS Jose Iglesias
C Christian Vazquez
SS Deven Marrero
...maybe a half dozen more that could get a more than a cup of coffee.
I'm sure there are some on this list who will disappoint and maybe a
couple who will surpass expectations but it is a very deep and talent
minor league system
Could it be a better collection than the 2008 pre-season group?

We shall see, but you have all these prospects, what should be a decent team
on the field (at least not embarrassing) present, and a financially flexible
future.
Things looked pretty bleak before that deal.

The deal was just what the Red Sox needed but it could work out for

Dodgers too.
Gonzalez is premier player and a huge upgrade from James Loney He
should be more comfortable in So California.
Last year the Dodgers had mediocre production in LF (.
267/.332/.411/.744) That includes a disappointing 53 games from new
Red Sox Shane Victorino (.667 OPS) Crawford, if healthy (if he is
ever healthy) should beat that.
Beckett had a 2.93 ERA in 7 LA starts. If he has his head out of his
ass he is a very good pitcher. The NL West could be just the place
for him.
No doubt the Red Sox wound up with tremendous financial flexability to
rebuild their team....and the Dodgers may seriously regret losing the
Webster and De La Rosa someday....but certainly Red Sox fans can
understand a 'Win Now' philosophy

Yeah. The way he reacted, I thought for sure he had a broken wrist. I was
trying to rack my head thinking who they could grab to play third this year.
I thought they might have to talk Scott Rolen into playing one more year.
