the two-year arrangement because the club had some concerns about exercising
the regenerating, $4 million option on the player's contract in the wake of
surgery to remove disc fragments from the player's back. Rather than commit
a guaranteed a $4 million to a 43-year-old coming off back surgery, the Red
Sox were willing to guarantee Wakefield a lower base salary in each of the
next two years with the chance to earn the same dollars if he remains
healthy.
"This year, Wakefield earned a base salary of $4 million and earned an
additional $575,000 in incentives while going 11-5 with a 4.58 ERA. Terms of
the new deal were not immediately available, but it is not unreasonable to
think that the Sox would just cut Wakefield's guarantee in half over each of

the incentives.

Good news on Wake. I hope Tek just decides to hang 'em up, but he

I'll give Tek one of my prized antique tractors if he'll give it and
leave.
They have a lot of nerve cutting Wake who was already the best
pitching bargain in the majors, doesn't use Boras, and does whatever
the team needs. That said, I wish they would give him the big bucks
to retire - I'm not thrilled watching knuckleball pitchers. But on
the other hand, keeping him will probably assure Kottaras a job and I
like the Greek.

If the Sox picked up his option, he would be guaranteed $4M and
that's all.
It's a matter of semantics, but if Wakefield is done after next
season, because of injury, age/uneffectiveness, then Wake makes a
total of $5M.
If he is brought back for the second year, chances are he might make
more than $5M total depending on what, if any, incentives he attains.

Yeah. Sounds very fair to me. To both sides. Wake needs 18 wins to be the
winningest pitcher in Red Sox history. He has said that would mean a lot to
him. Obviously. Well he won't be likely to do that in just one season, I
think we can all agree. So this also gives him a very good chance to do
that if he can stay healthy.
