Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Red Sox are shopping Mike Lowell
and are willing to pick up $6 million of his $12 million 2010 salary.

Speculation is that moving Lowell could allow the Red Sox to pick up
an Adrian.....

.....either Gonzalez by trade.....or Beltre via Free agency.

ps. Beltre has long been a favorite of Theo Epstein's. He likes him
even more than he liked Edgar Renteria or Julio Lugo.

Theo won't rest until no one on this team can hit more than 10-15 home runs.
Just a few more moves. They'll be patient though.

I'm not in favor of Beltre. The defensive issue could be answered as simply
as moving Youk and playing Kotchman at first and the offense would be as
good. I wouldn't be gambling on another Dominican with declining power
numbers at the age of 30. Not making any accusations mind you...just call
me skeptical.

They could also shift Lowell to first (to beat that horse to death), but
only if Lowell is going to buy into that completely. Of course we don't
know how well he will play at first either. If they are looking to eat
salary like this, I wonder if they don't suspect that may be a problem.

I'd love to get AG of course. But that price will be very high...probably
Buchholz AND Bard. That I don't much care for either. I think my own
preference would be to suffer by with one more season of Lowell and Papi
(team option next year) and gamble that they bounce back in what are
basically their last decent contract years. They will be extremely
motivated. I did NOT like hearing Papi asking for another power hitter for
the second straight off season. A lot of balls for him to come out with
that IMHO.

I'm wouldn't be happy with Beltre either but......

It would give the Red Sox (if they re-signed Alex Gonzalez) probably
the best fielding infield in the majors. That would be a significant
upgrade over last year..

Youkilis at 1B and Beltre at 3B is better defensively than Youkilis at
3B and Kotchman at 1B......and probably better offensively too.
Beltre has never played in park that is favorable to him. His home/
road splits in Seattle are terrible.

I think you are correct on the price for Adrian Gonzalez and I think
that is the Red Sox first choice but I don't think they would give up
Buchholz unless they could sign Lackey (or a reasonable facsimile).

I would rather dump $3 million re Varitek aka the worst player in the
majors. Lowell can still hit okay.

Gonzo makes much more sense long term than a Tek dump.

Well, here is my problem with the move "Lowell to first" plan. I don't
believe that playing 1B is any different from the glove perspective than
playing 3B. You still need range. We are just used to lumbering
firstbaseman, so it doesn't seem so bad. Then you put Lowell in the
position of needing to learn to play 1B right after all these years. It
certainly isn't an automatic.

And it would increase the likelihood of further injury.

There are more differences (as I'm sure you know) than you suggest
about 1st and 3rd, but your basic point is correct --- a guy with no
range at 3rd will have no range at 1st. Fewer balls to first, however,
so the damage is less. A big reason for a guy ending up at first is a
weak arm, but not an issue for Lowell.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of the Lowell to first idea.

Oh, I agree that there is much more. The arm for instance as you bring
up. And the ability to cover first and maximize the throws from the
other fielders. Can Lowell do it? As you state, the only obvious gain
is that less balls go to the right side. If he isn't great covering
first though, that advantage is quickly lost.
