"Righthander Daniel Bard was named the Red Sox rookie of the year by the
Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Jonathan
Papelbon was named the Red Sox fireman of the year for a record fourth
time."

So how many people are in the running for the Red Sox fireman of the
year? Have they only been giving it out for four years?

I don't know...but I seem to recall a fellow named Radatz winning it when i
was but a wee lad.

For the record...the BBW have given out it since 1951...just before I was
born.

We''ll assume for the moment that the BBW doesn't give out a
"Proofreader of Year Award"

I think 1981 should be Mark Clear.....with 4.11 ERA and 9 saves

Good eye Way. :)

I gotta think they got the year wrong too. The following year a case could
be made for him.

They don't always give it out either, which is sort of odd as well.

Well, I was trying to be more of a smart ***. Failed also I guess.
I was referring to the title "Red Sox Fireman of the Year". Narrows
the field just a tad, doesn't it?

I'm sorry. I still don't "get it" I guess. If you ARE going to give an
award to the "fireman of the year"...a term clearly referring to the ace
reliever of the Red Sox...certainly Papelbon is the guy. All I can think of
is that you think the term is for closers only...you know...like the coffee
in Glengarry Glen Ross? I believe any reliever qualifies if worthy.
Naturally most teams use their best guy as the closer that's all.

it is a stupid in house award. rather like a team Cy Young.
its an award that should only be league wide.
A team MVP sure, that's up for grabs.

and the name MVP should be dropped and it retitles 'Player of the Year'
because that is who gets it,

Maybe it is just me. But I just find it a bit of a lock. If Papelbon
doesn't get traded or tank next year, it will be five years in a row.
Would you want your fireman to be someone who isn't closing and isn't
the guy making (maybe) $8-10M?

IMO, it would be similar to having group awards here and two of them
being "the most prolific political poster" and the "best tweeter".

Is there a Red Sox MVP award? Did I miss the announcement?

Of course he's the guy. But in this day and age it's stupid to have
such an award. I imagine Rivera *might* win it for the Yankees. In
almost every case the closer, if he's any good, will win it.
