he was great for the Sox and the Sox decided to let him leave because of a
slavish attraction to sabermetrics.

Good ballplayer? Sure. Irreplaceable? No. Ironically he was the guy that
proved even Manny could be replaced. So can he.

That's true, but I dont want too pay Bay $16.5 and Drew $14 on the
payroll for this upcoming year. I think its clear that its the Red Sox
intentions to say just under the $170 million dollar luxury tax
threshold, so TEE are the only team that pays luxury tax. But if i had
too choose, I'd rather pay Bay up to $17 million, instead off
overpaying for Drew at $14 (or whatever he's making this upcoming
year).

Would we have been pleased for long with Bay as the 16.5 million dollar
superstar? Maybe. But he couldn't get away with hiding out in the fifth or
sixth spot in the order. And when he vanished as a power threat for a month
or two at a time...I wonder how he would take what might have come with
that. I just don't believe he is at that level any more than Drew is.
Hey...I wish he had re-signed too. But once they decided to move on to
Cameron it was done. He had his chance and ended up with a little more cash
and a worse circumstance IMO. Too bad. But he'll live and so will we and
the Red Sox.

I do. In fact I wish the Red Sox had 9 guys just llike him in the

Outside of the durability issue...and that's is a significant
one.....Drew and Youkilis are the most complete players on the team.

I second that. We know (or a least I feel we do) that Drew is far
better a defender than Bay.
So the rest over the last three years:
Games AVG OBP SLG
Drew 2007 140 .270 .373 .423
Bay 2007 145 .247 .327 .418
Drew 2008 109 .280 .408 .519
Bay 2008 155 .286 .373 .522
Drew 2009 137 .279 .392 .522
Bay 2009 151 .267 .384 .537
So they both stunk in 07, Bay moreso. Then there numbers are close with
Drew getting a slight OBP nod and Bay in SLG. Drew is a much better
defender and Bay plays more games. Does this add up to $3M more and
dogging Drew for getting overpaid?

I'm also a little surprised that Drew was not better on the bases, in
terns of taking the extra base. I assume all or most of the JD
"steals" were H&R plays that failed. Drew does not try to steal, or
does so hardly at all, perhaps due to lost speed, or injury concerns.
Drew had pretty decent steal numbers in his first 3 full years with
the Cardinals, but then nothing much. Lifetime an absymal 84 SB/ 35
CS. Those look to me like broken H&R numbers.

The Most Reckless Baserunner......Juan Rivera: Thrown out 11 times on
the bases and only took the extra base 28% he was on. Carl Crawford
was thrown out 13 times but he took the extra base 52% of the time he
was on.
Most Careful Baserunner.....Ken Griffey JR. He was the only player
in the AL with at least 300 PA to not be thrown out on the bases. (He
only took 2 extra bases all season however.)
Most Careful GOOD Baserunner Vernon Wells Took the extra base 54%
of the time he had the opportunity and was only caught 1
The Pay Attention Award..... Scott Posednik Picked off 11
times.....stole 30 bases..but was also caught 13 times.
...also David Dejesus Stole 4 bases.....was caught stealing 9 times
and picked off 4 more.
The I Wish I was like Jacoby Award. Kurt Suzuki. Attempted 10
steals.......secondbase 8 times without being caught......but was
cuaght twice trying to steal home.
