Bay's offense is a loss that needs to be replaced......Saito is still
a good pitcher......Gonzalez straddles the line between debt and
asset.....Bailey can contribute but in very limited situations.....the
rest are just jetsum......some might be flotsam
Right now I'd say judging the off-season would come down to whether
Lackey offsets Bay. If he does then the contributions of Scutaro and
Cameron should put the off-season in the plus column.....but not by a
lot.
The difference between the Yankees and the Red Sox is fairly
substantial. I don't see the changes the Red Sox made enough to close
the gap (especially after you figure in Cashman's moves)
So if Theo is done I'm not satisifed.....

Very fair assessment. Seems to me that Theo is not done. There are any
number of ways they can go between now and ST...even the trade deadline. I
don't think it's a bad approach at all. He has positioned the club to be
able to approach other teams and also agents from a position of, if not
strength, at least not desperation. For example...I'm not big on
Beltre...but if he falls through the cracks and his price becomes more
reasonable...maybe he won't be a horrible fallback plan. I sure wouldn't
want him for the usual Boras pricetag.
If they can't make anything work, they can start the season with this group
and see how well certain guys play. Was last year simply an aberration for
Papi? Will Mike Lowell be closer to the 2007 model or is he really more of
a DH now? Can Kotchman become a real asset? Will Hermida blossom into a JD
Drew type...but better...and healthier? Can I make mention of a sleeper to
barge his way into the OF mix? Ryan Kalish...who could progress quickly.
Plenty of questions, but the defense may/should be improved. The starting
pitching...as always barring injury, looks awesome on paper. I'll reserve
judgment for now, but I'm hopeful this could be a very good team. I think
we've seen often enough that you are sometimes better off with very good,
quality role players than a collection of potential all stars.

You forgot about Billy Wagner. He went to Hotlanta for a 1 year/$7
million with a vesting option in 2011.
