Mussina in strictly baseball terms, instead chose to trot out the same old
tired litany of how Angelos forced out all these wonderful people who were
dying to stay in Baltimore.
It's because he can't take the blinders off and see through Mussina and
Tellum's campaign to get Mussina out of Baltimore with his skirts clean. It's
because like all the other childeren, he's mad at teacher.
I don't blame Mussina for going to NY, but to come up with one bull reason
after another is an insult to the fans' intelligence.
We know why he left. He has career goals. One eye on the Hall Of Fame. Stop the
nonsense. If the Orioles had offered Mussina 90 million, do you think he would
have stayed in Baltimore, content to go 11-15 ?

And, I'm glad he's gone.
Not just to see him have an honest attempt at a ring, but also, the Orioles
don't have the tools to make a starter's job the least bit easier.
No setup man. No dominate closer. A shitty offense.....soon to be
shittier.
Moose showed me consistency in his reasons for signing his last two
contracts.
He took less so that he could pitch in front of full houses every nite, and
play with a bunch of veterans and Davey Johnson. A dream come true.
This time he chose to sign for a team of wiley veterans on a Yankee Dynasty
team, with a bullpen so good, it should be judged illegal. A dream come
true.

Well, considering this would've taken place certainly no later than around the
time that Mussina signed his LAST contract, I don't think so.

Replacing Nelson won't be a problem. And how old is the team getting?
You've got youth at C, 2B, SS and CF. They'll need to replace the corner
outfielders and infielders over the next few years. Justice will be good
for a few more seasons, Glenallen Hill is an excellent candidate to DH.
So they need to immediately replace RF, 3B and 1B. I think they'll be
able to do that.

Sure. Except for C, 2B, and CF. Posada's 29. Williams is 32.
Knoblauch's 32. That's not youth.
This isn't a young team. Their rotation is Moose (32), Clemens (38),
Hernandez (at least 31, but probably a lot older), and Pettitte (29).

They *already* need to replace them. Brosius and Tino were awful.
O'Neill was bad.

Sure, if they can somehow convince him to hit like he did in his first 50
ABs for them last year, rather than as he has his whole career. He's a
good player off the bench, but his career OBP is .324; normally you don't
want a DH who's easier to get out than the average player.
Justice is a good LF... except that his health doesn't allow him to play
OF full time, so you've got to DH him part time.

course, he was a nightmare. Unless he rebounds, he also needs to be
immediately replaced.
They're *not* replacing any of these positions, at least not this year.

Oh, really? Were is that going to happen from, their farm system? Do you
think any other team in the majors is going to just give them another
reliever? It's true that they do have youth at those positions but the power
positions are heavily declining.
I predict within the next couple of years Mussina is going to want out of New
York.

If the Yankees whole intent in the free agent market was to just sign Mike
Mussina away from the Orioles then they are definitely not looking at their
bigger picture. David is right. They need a major overhaul to replace their
impotent line-up. As I said Mike Mussina is going to be no different in New
York. For his sake he better be ready to post a career year in ERA because
the Yankee lineup will not be scaring too many teams.

I was thinking as I watched the WS this year that Hernandez was the
oldest-looking early-30s player I'd ever seen. He's gotta be pushing
40. Just the slackness of the skin around his eyes and cheeks is
enough to tell me that.
