I'd think Herb Pennock and Catfish Hunter and possibly Red Ruffing
(Sutton's clearly the better pitcher. Once you throw in Ruffing's
bat though ... well I'd still rather have Sutton) are weaker choices
by the witers.
A few years back Dale Stephenson compared the weakest writer's
picks with the best VC picks

Well most of the people who've met me have now migrated to Primer,
but Dan Szymborski does sometimes lurk.
I'm old enough to have memories of watching the 1965 World
Series on newsreels. My earliest clear baseball memory,
though I didn't really start to follow the game until 1969.

A) I'd call BS on those rumors.No way Komminsk was in that type
of discussion in any year but 1983 and Rice had a fine year
by anybody's standards that year.
B) If they had made the deal it's not clear to me that the Braves
would have been ahead of the game. Komminsk was terrible
to be sure but at least he was cheap and gone quickly.

Oh, and speaking of lame-hitting former Braves backup outfieldders, Willie
Harris hit more HR this year (13) than the Braves primary RF (Stenchy) and
LF (Blanco) combined (12).
And to add insult to injury, Mark DeRosa hit more HR (21) than Stenchy,
Blanco, Diaz and Kotsay combined (20).
