Nice to know there are some things you can always count on... Braves
and Pitching.

I hope one of those guys can close.

Speaking of closers, Mike Gonzalez just hired Scott Boras as his new
agent. So at least the Braves should get a sandwich pick for him.

The brand name value here is Lee Hyde. He was a promising draftee a
few years back, got hurt a couple of years running, finally got
healthy last year and put up some dominant numbers. He definately has
"closer" stuff. Between him and Moylan the Braves have sufficient, if
not famous options to close. I still expect the Braves to sign Billy
Wagner.

The main obstacle on Wagner is whether it's worth giving up a first
round draft pick to get him. The Braves should get a few picks from
other teams if they're generous in offering arb, but the Braves would
have to give one up to get Wagner.

All depends on where they sign. But yeah, if the Braves sign Wagner
(sacrificing pick #17 in the process), but let Gonzalez and Soriano
sign with the Yankees and Angels respectively (certainly possible
landing spots for each) the Braves will pick up #26 and #30 (I
believe) as well as the two sandwich picks (probably #35 & 37, or
around there). I suspect Soriano will be signed in advance of the
arbitration deadline, while Gonzalez is far more likely to decline
arbitration now (and if he accepted, that's a good move for the Braves
anyways) so it's a pretty good deal.

Of course, whether the Braves want Wagner and whether Wagner would
actually sign with the Braves is another question entirely.

It does get complicated. Wasn't it the case last year that the Braves
didn't get a first round pick for someone (Tex?) because the signing
team had already given up their first round pick for a higher ranked
free agent? My memory is hazy on that now.

Yes. The Brewers got the Yankees first rounder for Sabathia, then the
Jays got the Yankees next pick for Burnett, and Atlanta got nothing
for Teixeira.

Atlanta got nothing for Tex because because it traded him to Anaheim
for Casey Kotchman. I believe it was the Brewers who got screwed
because I seem to recall Doug Melvin being upset that he was getting a
very low pick for Sabathia (I think Anaheim did get the Yankees 1st
rounder for Teixeira). Toronto got nothing for AJ Burnett other than
a sandwich pick.

It's true, there is an economy of scale to signing Type A free agents
in that after two, you don't lose any more high draft picks. If the
Yankees were to sign both Matt Holliday and Mike Gonzalez (for
example), the Cardinals get the Yankees 1st round pick+1st round
sandwich pick, while the Braves get the Yankees 2nd rounder, but also
a 1st round sandwich pick.

It'll be interesting to see how the market looks for Wagner, given the
draft pick thing and his age and recent injury history.

I see what you did there.
