Atlanta on course for a new downtown Library

At its meeting on May 28, the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Board of
Trustees unanimously approved the recommendation made by Fulton County
Commissioner Robb Pitts (District 2, At-Large) to construct a new
Central Library in downtown Atlanta and include the facility in a
recommended Library Bond Referendum.
Pitts has recommended that a new landmark library be constructed on a
site in the downtown area. His proposal calls for an architecturally
significant structure with an emphasis on technology and learning in the
new millennium.
Several other U.S. cities, including Seattle, Nashville and Minneapolis,
have constructed avant-garde libraries in their downtown areas in recent
years. These serve as attractions for tourists and residents.
“With the support of the Board of Trustees, a new landmark library in
downtown Atlanta is closer to a reality,” said Pitts. “This new facility
will signify our community’s cutting edge emphasis on learning.”
John Szabo, Library Director, likes the idea. “The bold and exciting
idea to build a new Central Library in the heart of downtown Atlanta is
forward thinking and reflects a commitment to education, literacy and
the value of public libraries as critical cultural institutions,” Szabo
said. “A signature new Central Library would also follow in the wise
path of other great U.S. cities that have built new central libraries in
recent years: Seattle, Nashville, Minneapolis, Jacksonville, and others.”
Library Board of Trustees members at the meeting included Jim Maddox,
Diane Hutchins, Willie Bolden, John Eaves, Roger Rupnow, Steven Suna,
Anita Jackson O’Neal, John Thomas, Stephanie Moody and Delores Stephens.

Depends on the designer and the firm (obviously.) I'd prefer that
they go a little more modern than NYC, but if it comes down to lions
vs. phoenixii (?), go with the lions. Or Izzy.
