It's a matter of statistics...it's much easier to pass and keep the ball in
play that to go for a winner all the time. Only go for a winner when
you're in proper position and you're opponent isn't...easy to say, hard to
do ;-)
Wait til age and gravity slow you down and you're searching for ways to
beat the youngins...you'll be surprised how many points you'll get cause
you held back on low percentage shots (which may have been higher
percentage in younger days)...in order to keep the ball in play...and
maintained superior court position while your younger opponent went for the
harder shot ;-)

"Keep the ball in play, and return to center court."
This plain vanilla statement encapsulates two of the most important pieces of advice I could give to players who want to
improve their game.
1) "Keep the ball in play" means that if you miss a kill attempt by 1/4" low, it's a point for your opponent, or side
out for you. 1/4 " high, or even *waist-high*, and you still stand a chance of living to fight again another series of
hits in the same rally. Same with shoulder-high roll-out attempts, crazy three-wall balls, etc.
2) "Return to center court" is a rule that even top players sometimes forget, and I know I do. But if you picture a
tether with one end tied around your waist, and the other end staked to a point behind the short line, around mid-court
L to R, that is constantly pulling you back towards it, you get the idea. Don't stand after you shoot a decent shot,
waiting to see how it comes out! Hustle back towards center court so that you can react correctly to the opponent's play
on the ball. EXPECT them to get even your best kill attempts. Sometimes we get 'lazy-feet' , especially during ceiling
rallies - "Hey, I moved to center court, then back; then center court, then back...why don't I just camp out here on the
back wall, and see what happens..." Well, I can tell you what's going to happen, you are about to lose a point! INVEST
in the point by working hard all through it. But after a particularly hard-fought rally, don't let your guard down. I
can't count the times I've seen someone scrap to win a point at any cost - get's, dives, running... only to blow the
next serve by being exhausted! Remember: an unreturnable half lob counts the same as a forty foot rollout to end a 19
shot rally!
