Just before the semi-finals of the event, Peg Ledman told Paul Mon and I to
go sit where Jean and Gerda had been sitting, since they had been moved to
the "front row." They were great seats, so we happily moved in. In between
the semis and the finals, Paul took off, and I stayed put. Before I knew
what was going on, Jean came back and reclaimed Paul's seat! I guess I
could have said, "hey, Jean, get out of Paul's seat!", but I thought better
of it. I did offer to give Gerda her seat back and move to another section,
but Jean assured me that I was fine where I was.
The rest of it is like a dream. An absolute dream. We had a conversation
just like we were having drinks at a bar. She retold the same stuff that
you all have read on Billiards Digest, and then some. Is she contemplating
a comeback? Did she want to play the US Straight Pool event last year? Was
she glad she didn't? What does she think about watching the players? Is she
still playing competitively? Does she own a jump stick? (Ok, that one isn't
in BD). She initiated much of the conversation concerning her feelings
toward the SARDO rack, players playing strategy, pool and sports spectating
in general. It was cooler than cool.
Just to tickle you all just a wee bit, when discussing any possibilies about
any comeback, Jean whispered on the sly, "it would be interesting being a
fan favorite... for once."
Fred +~~~ tickling
congrats on yur meeting

Damn Fred, are you going to make us all go back and read the article? I
usually only look at the pictures and read the ads and the ratings.
Was this meeting really more exciting than when you first met Gerta? You
are a fickle pool groupie.

I think so.

I guess that's another reason to use Netscape!8^))

It makes perfect sense to me. Imagine if Strickland retired today and
10 years were to pass. Likely we'd forget all the temper tantrums and
the legend would only grow, IMO.
Think so? I haven't forgotten Ille Nastase, Jim Connors or John McEnroe

Gosh, how I wish Jean B. would come back into the competitive game! I
for one would like to see a little more fire in the WPBA! Not taking
anything away from Allison or Karen (or others) but aside from their
excellent skills, they are as about as exciting to watch as paint dry.
Longing for more players who show a little more FIRE toward the game,
c'mon Vivian and Jean (and sometimes Ms. Lee) lets loosen this up a
bit, after all, it's 9 ball!
Pick up Tennis magazine, it seems like the same people who poo-pooed their
on-court antics of yesteryear are the same ones calling for a more colorful
breed of tennis player today.

All in all, I do think Tony was right. Though many still remember McEnroe and
Connors, and all their antics, it seems like they're even more revered now then
in their playing days.
I remember reading a biography on Connors, and how much people hated the man.
I think that now, if you were to have another player who behaved in the same
fashion Connors did, he would no doubt be hated by many tennis fans. On the
other hand, 20 or so years after his career, it may be a different story.

And in all the examples they weren't "hated then and revered now".
Some hated them then, but many more lionized them then, as now. Most
fans will overlook or even admire a competitor's "quirkiness" if
he/she's good enough.

Yeah, but it's kinda hard to fault a boxer for being violent.
