Well, it's happened. On Wednesday Dec 23, at the City Pacific Hotel in
Wollongong, I asked Mel to marry me. After a long delay of about 0.017
seconds, she said "yes"!

As soon as I saw Mel at the airport, I knew things would be right between
us. For one thing, she fits snugly in my arms - and we both needed that
during her stay.

Sadly, there was a very sour note. The woman who unfortunately has the legal
right to call herself my mother, (but no longer the moral right as far as I
am concerned) had obviously planned to be nasty, irrational, vicious and
downright evil to Mel - something she had obviously planned, as none of her
actions or insults had any rationale behind them.

The upshot was, two days before Xmas, we were told we were no longer
welcome, and that she didn't even want us to visit. This meant we had
virtually no time to plan anything special for Xmas, or for Mel to give that
woman the present she had been making for six months.

As it happens, it worked out well. Mel and I had far more time together, and
we loved every minute of it. The kindness and good service of people we met
was astounding and heart-warming.

My thanks go out to the staff of The City Pacific Hotel, who went out of
their way to make sure everything was right for us. Even to a very touching
letter as we left to head for Katoomba in the Blue Mountains.

There we stayed at the beautiful Mountain Heritage Hotel, in the old Tower
Suite.

Boy, was that romantic! A beautiful round room with six windows, a very
large Juliette balcony, and a wonderful gas lit coal fire - which believe it
or not - we needed!!!

Mel bought some candles with her, and after checking with the staff that it
was ok to do so, we placed the little aromatherapy candles around the room.
Add a nice bottle of wine, and each night was magic.

We stayed there for four nights, before heading for the RG Hotel in Sydney
for New Years Eve. That was the only sour note as far as hotels are
concerned. We were shown to our room - a dingy little twin room - not the
deluxe suite that had been booked. They picked the wrong time to try that:)

The night at the Opera House was marvellous. Again, people were very kind,
and as Mel had difficulty walking up the very steep steps inside, we were
escorted through the stage door and private lift.

The fireworks were a little disappointing, but we had enough fireworks
during our stay to make up for it:):)

And yes, we did play - a lot! and it was wonderful!!!

Hi Mike

So pleased that you and Mel are gonna tie the knot and that her trip over was so
great!! Its a pity about your mom but as they say 'you can pick your friends
but not your rellies'...sad when the source of conflict is such a close one
though.

Anyway look on the bright side , Mel is the future and you have a lot to be
grateful for. Hope you told the staff at the RG Hotel a few home truths
though!!

Sounds like a great trip Mike and my warmest congrats to the pair of you. What
is it with spankos in December? You and Mel get engaged, Pablo and Mija and
Tony and Eve got married...er..separately and just one partner each of
course...there must be something in the ether!!

Good on yer mate!!!

Alex

Oooh, Mike, I am so thrilled that you and Mel had a grand time together

In the end, it worked out really well. It gave us far more time to get to
know each other. The Opera House Gala was marvellous, and we had a box with
an excellent view. Patrons were also allowed to take pictures, as quote,
"the taking of photographs is completely - predictable" :) I took a few good
pics of the end of the concert.

There was a break at 9 pm for the first set of fireworks, then the concert
finished at around 10:30. There was a band, dance floor and plenty of bars
until 1am, with spectacular view of the midnight fireworks - half of which
sadly, did not work!

I bought a beautiful suit for the occasion, but when I went to change, I
discovered that in all the confusion of leaving home hurriedly, I had left
the suit trousers at home! Fortunately I still had a good pair of trousers
and the Zegma shirt I intended wearing:)

I would have looked a bit overdressed in the suit anyway, formal occasions
here are not that formal:):) and the guy next to me was wearing jeans and a
short sleeved shirt:) which was pretty much par for the course.

Mel had a good welcome as they opened with Porgy and Bess, and I had to
smile as the male singer sang to his beloved, "I got plenty of nuttin":)

It was a wonderful trip SG, and I consider myself very lucky - and happy.

I can't take credit for this one Alex! That was when I saw Mel at her
feistiest! John Wayne eat your heart out:) They pretty soon surrendered:)

What they should have realised of course is, that they should never have
tried to prevent Mel, having a separate bedroom to be sent to:):)

BTW, on Boxing Day, Mel and I sat down to watch the cricket, and within a
short time, she had a pretty good grasp of the game - in fact - a better
grasp of cricket than the Pakistan team:)

Mike and Mel I hope you will be very happy and have a long and wonderful life
together !
Here are some appropriate song lyrics for your new found circumstances:

we've only just begun to live
white lace and promises
a kiss for luck and we're on our way
and yes, we've just begun

before the rising sun we fly
so many roads to choose
we start our walking and learn to run
and yes, we've just begun

sharing horizons that are new to us
watching the signs along the way
talking it over just the two of us
working together day to day
together

and when the evening comes we smile
so much of life ahead
we'll find a place where there's room to grow
and yes, we've just begun

A big hit for the Carpenters and sung since at countless weddings. I thought it
appropriate here because I'm assuming all will go as planned.

I hope she will come around Guv'nor but in any event just remember "Therefore
shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and
they shall be one flesh." Gen.2:24.

My best wishes go with the two of you.

And that tune was quite possibly the last time a contemporary pop song
became a standard. Unless I'm failing to think of anything else since?

On reading your comment I went to my piano and opened the bench and began
going thru the sheet music there. I have a large collection (my hobby) but the
ones I keep in the bench are among my favorites. The only one I came up with
that may meet your criteria I think is "(You are) The Wind Beneath My Wings".
It's been covered by dozens of artists and though it has Nashville roots most
of the artists are pop/rock I think. I recall, not the year, Bette Midler
singing it near the end of her movie "Beaches" and it was quite a poignat
delivery. I doubt it is sung at weddings but I've heard that it has been sung
at funerals and memorial services. I believe Bette sang it in fact at a
memorial for the victimes of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. What a dreary world it
would be if we didn't have music.

AJ,

Many songs are covered by multiple artists. But when a song becomes
almost a cliche, it's a standard.

If "The Wind Beneath My Wings" is being sung at funerals and memorial
services, then it definitely qualifies. But only time will tell if it
endures the way that Carpenters tune has.

The ultimate example would be the "wedding march" we've all heard a
zillion times, which was originally from an opera by Lohngren.

Best,
Tony

Many thanks Mish:) Yep, it sure can!

I know that too many people such a relationship would seem strange, yet I
have always felt, that a relationship forged over the internet, has many
advantages.

Mel and I both use webcam. As I run the consultancy from home, she joins me.
This enables us to spend several hours a day together, seeing into each
others lives. We have seen each other at our best and our worst. If there
are problems, we can be "face to face" within minutes. If problems involve
others, we can all get together without too much fuss.

Yes, we miss the touching and holding, but as far as quality time is
concerned, I think we spend more time together and know each other better,
than many so called conventional couples.

Yep, I have already put plans in place to make damn sure of that. Every
second of every day, I want her to know why she is left old, alone and
unloved by anyone - especially her children. And when I put a plan in
operation to screw someone, it always succeeds.

Yes she is scared, and yes, she is ill, but I no longer care. Every time I
look at her, I see the look on Mel's face at the hurt she was subjected to.
Of all the evil things this bitch from the gutters of Vienna has done to her
family, this was the worst.

I have one brother who I have seen once since 1964 - and that was in 1967,
and another who I haven't seen since 1980. By the time I was 11, she had
kicked them both out - the oldest at 16. I have nephews and nieces now in
their late 20s and 30s, who I have never met.

My dad a former director, died a broken man looking like a refugee from
Belsen or shuffling around like a down market Arthur Haynes. He was only 66.
She did that.

I appreciate that Minxy, but she will never ever get my forgiveness. It's
payback time.

Just a point of information here, Tony and others. The "wedding march"
comes from an opera CALLED Lohengrin by a gentleman of whom you might
have heard called Richard Wagner. Quite a dab hand at opera writing in
his day, I believe.

And while I'm on that sort of subject the "bridal march" comes from the
incidental music to "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (playwright's name
escapes me) by Felix Mendlsson (?sp)

And many congrats to the happy couple.

This is the one frequently played as the processional. "Here comes the
bride...etc."

>And while I'm on that sort of subject the >"bridal march" comes from the
>incidental music to "A Midsummer Night's >Dream" (playwright's name

This is the one often played as the recessional as the couple leave the church
amidst a hail of rice and good wishes.

It's Mendelssohn.

>Owen Williamson aka Ashthorn
>"Cherish the love we have"

Both are frequently referred to as variously the wedding march, or the bridal
march.

AOL has been dropping, or not picking up, many messages lately so I had to do
the cut and paste thingy on this one. Thus it looks slightly clumsy for which I
apologize.

Actually, the opera is CALLED Lohengrin, and its composer was Richard
Wagner.

Lohengrin (l´n-grn), in medieval German story, is a a knight of the
Holy Grail, son of Parzival. He is sent to rescue Princess Elsa of
Brabant from an unwanted suitor. Led to Antwerp by a swan, Lohengrin
saves Elsa and marries her. She is forbidden to ask his identity, but,
overcome by curiosity, she asks. As a result, Lohengrin must return to
the castle of the Grail. The swan reappears and is revealed to be Elsa's
brother. In its fullest form the story is treated in a German epic poem
composed c.1285–1290 and ascribed to Wolfram von Eschenbach by its
unknown author. Wagner based his libretto for the opera Lohengrin (1850)
on this source. The swan's metamorphosis is also a theme in classical,
Celtic, and other mythologies.
