Melinda Hayes - Presenter. Tonight on the World Of Art Show, we have with us
the new Australian artist, Martin Moorecroft who has been receiving
extremely favourable reviews for his painting "The Kitchen Table"

Martin, your painting recently unveiled at the Royal Sydney Gallery has
caused quite a sensation. It is a powerful statement on woman's inner
conflict at a time when females were beginning to challenge their role in
society and break away from stereotype images and the dominance of males in
society, business and politics.

Martin: Pardon?

Melinda: Well, isn't it true to say that your use of every day objects are
symbolic of the woman's role in society during the time period depicted in
your painting?

One can not fail to be impressed by the powerful symbolism as epitomised for
example, by the kitchen table . So simple, just an everyday object, but an
object that for a woman in those days, was the physical embodiment of what
was expected from her. It is not just a table, it is the shackle that binds
her to a life of servitude in a male dominated world.

The female is depicted slumped over the table, weary from the days work. She
is too tired even to dress, that is why....

Martin: Cobblers.

Melinda: Excuse me?

Martin: it's a painting depicting a woman about to get her arse smacked.

Melinda (smiling) Ah, Martin, I see your famous sense of humour is at play.
As I was saying, she is naked because she is too tired even too dress..

Martin: Bollocks. She's naked because she's going to get it good and proper.
And I'm not just talking about a spanking either!

Melinda: LOL, I must say, you are refreshingly modest about the strength of
the statements made by your work.

The viewer can not fail to be moved by the look of anguish on her face. She
is tired and can not move. The emotions inside her bubble like a witches
cauldron. Part of her wants the help of her husband who is standing behind
her, but another part is screaming out "I may be a woman, but I am
independent, I do not need a male to help me". Her face is the external
reflection of her internal turmoil.

Martin: Actually, she's screaming," Please, I'll be a good girl, I promise"

Melinda (giggling) Oh Martin, I see we may have to keep you away from the
Entertainment Lounge when you next appear. Let's move on now to the man.

He comes home from work and begins the male "pipe and slipper" ritual.
However, after he has picked up the first slipper, he sees his wife slumped
over the table, naked and helpless. He rushes to her aid, throws up his arms
in horror - too worried to even drop his slipper.

You have frozen that moment in time. He is the male, her protector, yet, she
is not sure she wants to be dependent on a male, but too uncertain to be
completely confident in her ability to embrace the emerging tide of
feminism.

Martin: She's certain she doesn't want her bloody arse smacked that's for
sure.

Melinda (Weary smile) Let's take another look at the woman. You have decided
not to make her perfect, She has blemishes, wrinkles, her figure is not the
classic figure one often sees in art. She is a woman, she is the spirit of a
stereotype, she's....

Martin: She's the barmaid from The Crown And Anchor.

Melinda: What a brilliant touch Martin. Choosing a woman in an occupation so
associated with male and female stereotypes.

Martin: I chose her because I happened to be bonking her at the time and she
likes a bit of hanky spanky if you know what I mean.

Melinda: LOL Oh Martin, you certainly are unorthodox.

Martin: I'm definitely not orthodox, I'm Church Of England

Melinda. One has to ask, what made you choose this theme. Was it because
your conscience told you that such inequality between the sexes is wrong, or
was it perhaps that in a time when feminism is now accepted, we need
reminding of the struggle and adversity faced by those early pioneers.

Martin: Not really. I made it because my mate Arthur asked me to.

Melinda: Arthur? He's your patron I presume?

Martin: More sort of a patron of the Crown And Anchor.

Melinda: It has been claimed that the painting has been priced in six
figures, would you say that was a true reflection of it's worth.

Martin: Not when you consider Arthur paid me 20 bucks. Still hasn't paid me
either the bludger.

Melinda: Have you any thoughts about your next work?

Martin: Not until tonight. But you have given me artistic inspiration. In
fact, I reckon you'd be a perfect model if you want to help out.

Melinda: Oh it would be marvellous to be associated with something I am sure
will be a fine work of art - a defining moment perhaps in Australia's
artistic heritage. Can you tell us a bit more about it Martin?

Martin: Sure. There's this garden see, but the garden is supposed to be the
world. In the garden, there's this oak tree. The tree is actually a phallic
symbol, representing male dominance. It's branches reaching out and casting
shadows upon the garden, which is of course, the world.

A woman - that's where you come in - is bound naked to the tree which
demonstrates how women are tied and shackled by men, unable to break free.

Standing behind her is a man called Lot, as in "This is my bloody Lot in
life" He is seen holding a switch and if you look closely at her body, you
will notice the marks of the switch on her ar..buttocks. In other words, her
Lot in life has left it's mark on her.

Melinda: May I ask you one last question about your next painting.

Martin: Sure, ask away

Melinda: The model for Lot, do you think perhaps you could get Sean Connery?

This is hilarious! The perfect illustration that things aren't always
as they seem. And Martin is an expert at understatement ;-) .
