Seems like the news group is dying. I remeber the days this group would
see 20-30 posts of good content.

Out of curiousity, now that Oracle pulls Sun's strings, how independant
and self reliant is OpenSolaris? Is OpenSolaris position to survive or
hit the wayside?

Opinions? Thoughts?

The reduction in traffic here is partly an indication of the success of
Solaris x86. It is now well in the Solaris mainstream, where a few
years ago it was more of a bastard child hobbyist platform.

Compare the balance of Sparc and x86 questions on c.u.solaris now with 5
years ago and you'll see what I mean.

Then there's all alternative support from the OpenSolaris lists and Sun
forums that have popped up over the last 5 years.

Usenet on the whole is dying.

There is far, far, far more activity on the various opensolaris mailing
lists than there has ever been in this newsgroup.

From what I read, it's the web 2.0 stuff that is more fashionable
(twitter and what not).

Who knows. Time will tell.

I like the more open nature of the usenet. Some idiot moderator can't
squash a conentious question they don't want out. And you can use the
same interface for more than one subject/thread.

Maybe in time the 2.0 hype will be replaced going full circle when
people discover the freedom of usenet once again. 2.0 is a buzz
word...for idle minds. It is the same a 1.0 but with excuses to
deviate. It is still 1.0 underneath.

The signal to noise ratio here remains good.
The volume seems to have moved to the OpenSolaris project's various
mailing lists.

Sun still pulls Sun's strings.

A quick request of the Google Oracle suggests that the taxman
in Europe still hasn't appoved the deal.

Does that mean the eternal September is coming to an end?

When was the last time you saw a newbie question from an AOLer on
Usenet?
