so I've been looking into Solaris recently after deploying some free
linuxware on an XP machine via virtual pc.

The Sun dl site has a downloadable Solaris 9 image for $20 (?)

did I read this right?

Is there any reason not to switch from m$?

What won't I be able to do (besides Quark PhotoShop, and I can always
dual boot back, right)?

Wayne,

My opinion, just about everything except for most of the games the kids
like. All the functionality is there, you just need to know what the
equivalent programs are. Instead of Photoshop, you'd be using Gimp or
ImageMagick. Instead of Quicken it be GnuCash. Microsoft Office now
would be StarOffice or OpenOffice. The list goes on, my son was almost
happy until he had to play Sims. He couldn't get it working in Wine
(program to run Windows apps).

There is a little bit of a learning curve. An example, is it doesn't
run in 24 bit graphics by default and scripts need to be created to get
the job done. Most people on this list are willing to help. Other News
Groups include:

I've been happily running Solaris now since 2.1 and Unix since
Interactive Unix for about 10 years now. My house doesn't have Windows
running (except for my sons laptop). I run both Sparc and X86.

did it...
am doing the install via Virtual PC right now.
Will probably install as a test on a separate hd for a while on my
main machine, then maybe totally convert.

I asked the family what they use most often:
web browser
solitaire (the wife)
mp3 players (my son)
bus apps (Word) can use open office

seems t\that its time to get out of the "cattle line."

And we can always use Wine... right?

Paul, thanks for the response...

The dirty secret is a lot of customers have been running Solaris x86 for
years and enjoy keeping there data on a reliable server based on the
Solaris OS. Dosn't mean you can't have fun with games on Winders systems.
