Arundhati Baden-Mayer Eidinger, 5, joins a rally outside ...
A group of the nation's top scientists defended research on global climate
change Friday against what they called a politically motivated smear
campaign designed to foster public doubt about irrefutable scientific facts.
The allegations came after skeptics seized upon a series of hacked e-mails
at England's University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit as evidence of
a climate change hoax.
The scientists from two major research centers, a national think tank and
NASA, claimed during a telephone news conference that the e-mail exchanges
were taken out of context in an attempt to influence pending greenhouse gas
emissions policies.
It is, they said, a cynical, blatantly dishonest effort to cloud the fact
that the world is now confronting a huge, potentially disastrous climactic
shift.
"There is so much information that tells us the planet has been warming,"
said Gavin Schmidt, a climate modeler at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space
Studies. "No independent study is going to come up with anything other than
what we've already concluded."
Leaders from 190 nations are meeting in Copenhagen next week to discuss the
issue, but no binding agreements are expected to be reached until after U.S.
legislators agree to limit carbon emissions sometime in the spring.
The world's foremost scientists, some 2,500 in all, agree that an increase
in global temperatures since 1900 is responsible for the melting of the
Antarctic ice sheet, acidification of the ocean, sea level rise and habitat
destruction.
Drumbeat of skepticism
Despite this, the drumbeat of skepticism about global warming has never been
louder. The Internet and conservative news programs have been flooded over
the past week with breathless accounts of alleged scientific fraud.
Exhibit A in the controversy are the stolen e-mails, which include messages
between academics in the United States and Britain talking about getting
greenhouse skeptics "ousted" and referring to research "tricks."
Phil Jones, head of the East Anglia research unit, temporarily stepped down
Tuesday after the university began an investigation into the stolen files,
which officials called a "criminal breach."
Republican members of Congress barraged President Obama's science adviser,
John Holdren, with questions and accusations. Rep. James Sensenbrenner,
R-Wis., the ranking Republican on the House Select Committee on Energy
Independence and Global Warming, said "the documents show systematic
suppression of dissenting opinion."
Blogs and television pundits have dubbed the issue "Climategate."
The scientists dismissed the criticisms Friday as intellectually dishonest
distortions by those who seek to discredit global warming for political or
business reasons. When scientists talk about "tricks," pointed out several
academics, they are often using colloquial jargon that means a method of
dealing with a problem.
Michael Mann, the director of the Earth Systems Science Center at
Pennsylvania State University, was among those whose e-mails were circulated
as evidence of attempts to exclude scientists with differing opinions. He
said the passages were cherry-picked phrases from casual conversations about
the quality of peer review at certain publications and how bad science
should be excluded.
"They have engaged in this 11th-hour smear campaign where they have stolen
personal e-mails from scientists, mined them for single words or phrases
that can be taken out of context to twist their words and I think this is
rather telling," Mann said, pointing out that some of the e-mails were more
than a decade old. "Those advocating inaction don't have the science on
their side."
Mountain of evidence
Schmidt and Michael Oppenheimer, the director of the Science, Technology and
Environmental Policy department at Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School, said
the mountain of scientific evidence pointing to human-caused climate change
is all available for scientific review by any skeptic.
They said a colder than normal October in the U.S. - often cited by warming
skeptics - does not make for a trend, no matter how often it is repeated on
blogs and cable television.
"It remains true that Earth has warmed more than 1 degree Fahrenheit over
the last century largely due to the buildup of human-made greenhouse gases,"
Oppenheimer said. "It remains the case that the projections of future
climate change are every bit as discouraging as they were before the recent
flap began."
Joseph Romm, a physicist and senior fellow at the liberal Center for
American Progress, said the evidence of warming is getting clearer while
opponents are "redoubling their disinformation campaign."
"The last ten years are the warmest ten year period in the modern record,"
said Romm, who served in the U.S. Department of Energy in the 1990s. "These
observations are unequivocal. The question is what will happen in our
future, and that is still in our hands."

There are three types of people that you can not talk into behaving
well. The
stupid, the religious fanatic, and the evil.
1-The stupid aren't smart enough to follow the logic of what you say.
You
have to tell them what is right in very simple terms. If they don't
agree, then
you'll never be able to change their mind.
2- the right wing fanatic
If what you say goes against their
religious belief, they will cling to that religious belief even if it
means their
death."
3- There is no way to reform Conservative evil- Not in a million
years
There is no way to convince the right wing terrorists, vile,
antiscience,
superstitious anthropogenic global warming deniers, serial killers,
paedophiles, and predators
to change their evil ways. They knew what they were doing was wrong,
but that
knowledge didn't stop them. It only made them more careful in how they
went about
performing their evil acts.

Hmmm.
You're pretty much nuts, aren't you?
This is the situation with the global warming deniers: they are truly
convinced that just by saying "No, this does not prove anything", then
they have destroyed all evidence.

Yea, nothings really happening. The ice is melting, Good, it sucks. I

Thanks for posting that.

Interesting how Republicans, the party responsible for 80% of the
national debt, always start whining about it when a Democrat is in the
White House.
Maybe you would be taken seriously, bubbles, if everyone was as stupid as
you and like you, couldn't remember back three years when Dick Cheney was
saying "Deficits don't matter."
Yawn. The jig is up. Now STFU about it.

Boy, costs a lot of money to pay all those scientists to fabricate the GW
scam, and now look what those discovered emails have done.
Oh, well, back to the drawing board. Maybe you could fall back on your
previous failed attempt.
"As they review the bizarre and unpredictable weather pattern of the past
