OK it was off topic but I am really wondering what food is costing everyone.
It seems as though the past 10 years food cost have just gone nuts. I live
in Okla and we have dairy farms everywhere yet 1 gallon of milk is 3.23 ?
It's the same with cattle and beef prices. I could go on but this isn't
alt.groceries.

Is 7.60 PP PD too exorbitant?

7.60 PP PD maybe works in favor of a large family unit. For one person that
probably wouldnt work.

Are you saying you spend more because you have fewer people to feed or that
you spend less? My mother is retired and single and she feels she spends
more because of portions being so large food ends up going to waste.

Well for me, I'm a big man 6'2" 220 (gained a bit last year) and I have a
set of weights that I use regularly. :)
My portions are probably larger then what she would eat.
I think the point she might be trying to make is that if it were four people
of just one, the portion that you would buy stays the same. If you arent
eating all of your left overs (man i remember when i still had left overs
:-) and it stacks up in the fridge and winds up getting tossed the night
before trash pickup. :(
Ergo still spending more at the store. The current ecconomy isnt helping the
figures per day either.

I've had to raise my food budget from $6/day to $8/day for a single person
in the last two years because of inflation. Yes I'm overweight, but that's
more from an extremely sedentary lifestyle. I mostly microwave TV dinners,
drink diet soda, eat chips and chocolate covered almonds & pepperoni with a
few trips to Wendy's each week on the Value Meal. For nearly 20 years it was
$6/day. Hey, go to McDonalds and get a Big Mac Meal and that's getting close
to $8 now, but I don't, so I'm not sure.

Milk (gallon--white skim to whole) on sale is $1.60 to $1.70
at major chains. Sale typically every two weeks for the past
6 months.

I live in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St Paul, MN) area and
monthly food costs for me are now under $150/month, up from
$100-$125 about 4-5 years ago. I don't buy a lot of junk
food, but do include Arby's (5/$5 on now, for example, as
one of those deals is good for five meals at $1 each).

We don't have a lot of grocery stores to pick from. We have a few Food
Pyramids, Wal-Mart, Reasors and warehouse market. Then there is Dollar
General or Sav A Lot. Really bad food in there. Reasor's has a internet
shopping but you have to pick it up but it still helps with social anxiety
issues. They charge $5 for that. We don't eat out. We cook at home every
night so the kids think they are being abused because they don't get
McDonalds. If we do fast food ,for a family of 5, $30 to $35 for everyone to
get what they want.If we scrimp and get the value menues without drinks is
$10 to 12 abd with drinks it turns to $ 15 to 18 real quick. We stay
relatively healthy by eating at home. The kids still get their school virus
stuff but for the most part still have no abscenses at school and never
really need to go to the Dr. same for my wife. I am a different story
though.

Except for states that have milk price supports, like Pennsylvania,
where's it's _illegal_ to sell milk at a price below a specified minimum
(currently around $3/gal.).

Such a diet can also be incredibly inefficient re nutrition.

If you read a good nutritionist like Michael Pollan ("The Omnivore's
Dilemma"), he might have you buying mostly whole veggies from the
produce dept. But the gen'l idea is that, the less processing and
adding chemicals to the food, the better it is for you. It's also
usually less expensive than highly processed foods.

I tend to buy beef and pork (on sale) at an upscale super, re-package as
individual servings, and freeze. Every night I pull next days
lunch and dinner to thaw in the fridge. Cook a good bit of rice, etc,
also individually frozen.

Doesn't mean I don't make good use of a pizza. Try to eat about 2 Big
Mac's/year. :-)

Milk and egg prices not too bad here in MO. But I can't fathom the
prices for ice cream, candy bars, and lots of other stuff. They just
won't come down.

me, it has to do with a price war between the two big chains here,
Once that is settled, I expect prices to rise again. Also, I can't

Cooperative Extension in most states offers at least advice advice and
probably classroom programs on healthy less expensive meals.

I worked for them some years ago, and when I left the nutrition aids
(who taught healthy & inexpensive eating) made a super farewell lunch
for next to nothing. I especially remember the sweet potatoe pie, fat
back in okra and the best fried chicken in the world.

Ya, the grocer here once asked me if he could order anything that I couldn't
find in his store. I said Collards.
He ordered a case and I was his only customer. Add to that he had to jack
the price up past what I was comfortable paying (transportation and
"specialty item" and I finished off the case and he didnt order anymore.
I could probably order a case myself and spend less then I did being
appreciative for his "efforts".

Yet they have more fish that has been cured with lye then they can sell and
throw it out into the dumpster every month. :(

I have a big freezer, i buy 400 lbs of meat a year at $750 for the
whole 400lb i am buying 100 whole birds whole 1/4 beef and 1/2 a
hog .
thats about $2.04 a day for meat i send about another $750 on rice
( 100# bags olive oil( 10 gal each) and spices.
and spend about another $3 a day on veg's
milk is $1.29 to $1.59 a gal whole.
butter is about $1.79 a lb for me ( on sale is the only time i buy)

Calorie count for a man my size 6'3 240 lbs should be about 2500 calories a day, don't wait until you are starved to eat. Eat a sandwich or fruits in between meals and that should help cut down. You can cook pasta and put butter and garlic on it and you'll be full for a long time. If you get foods that digest quickly then you be hungry quicker like (Chinese Food)

You know here in Texas the Food chains price match if one has milk for 2.00 then the other like Kroger, WalMart will match that price also coupons we are on food stamps and they take coupons we get from the Sunday or thurs newspaper and here is a online coupon place where you go to places like Kraft and print out coupons and the stores will take them. My wife goes to the store and get 40/50 bucks off because of coupons.

http://coupons2.smartsource.com/smartsource/index.jsp?Link=5S2ZUA6PWPEPO

Enter your zip and it gives you coupons to use in your area

http://www.couponloop.com/id133.htm

This one has WalMart coupons

and the sales work for meat also Kroger offers 5lbs of chicken legs and thighs WalMart will match it, eggs you name it we got steaks last week.

The only thing WalMart won't match is buy one get one free.

I drink Diet Cokes, 5~12 packs for $10.00 or two 24 Packs for 11.99

We shop twice a month and my wife saves over 100.00 a month price matching with all the local stores.

You certainly have some nice people in Texas.

The Wal*Mart here follows company policy when it comes to matching prices
and accepting coupons. It must be for the same brand and size, which means
that almost nothing matches. The Wal*Mart here stocks mostly the Wal*Mart
brands. Very little in the store will be the same as any other store, and
the few items that are the same brand (not food) are a different item
number (made specifically for Wal*Mart) so sale ads on those items are also
not matched.

If I had other options, I'd never shop at Wal*Mart. As it is, our
Wal*Mart's produce is so expensive, I can buy cheaper at the Safeway store,
and it used to be the most expensive place in town.

Here Store brands are matched to WalMart store brands. They match ground meat with WalMart ground meat not that mystery meat in the tube but stuff like Chuck and Sirloin. Even the eggs WalMart has it's own brand but will match the store Eggs for Large Eggs. Fruits also Mangos and Bananas, Apples and Grapes. they match name brands also.

The only thing they can't match is Deli stuff, beer and wine, most stores have Boars Head and Private Selection Cheeses and ham and Roast Beef etc. Kroger on Thursdays triple the Coupons up to .75 cents and double the rest of the week.

They match to:
Kroger
Safeway/Randall's
Food Town
Food Lion
Fiesta

We live so close to the Mexican Border and we have a huge port where the fruit comes in from South America, that our produce is really cheap Mangos .99 cents each, the most expensive are Pineapples.

One of the Super Wal Mart here refused to price match so my wife called Benton ARK headquarters and the store manager. You could always do the Email thing. I drink Diet Cokes and I kept the end bar codes half the cans were flat, I sent the coke company a picture of me standing in front of 40 55gallon plastic bags with empty Diet coke cans with my complaint letter (I saved the cans to recycle)the local coke distributor rolled up with a truck and put a coke machine by my pool and kept it supplied for a whole two years. diet Coke is the only soft drink that keep saliva in my mouth (six heart attacks and twelve back surgeries) so now they send me coupons to buy five 12 packs and get five free. Because I am diabetic the 12oz can is what I carry in my pack due to the mountain of meds I must take.

But try calling Bentonville Ark.

I explained that I am on disability my wife is also on disability and work comp and if Wal Mart refuses to price match we will be forced to shop in other stores. We would get a van full of seniors to go to the stores that will price match.
The other problem that we had was that here in Texas we have had 40 days of 100 degree temps and our group preferred to shop at night, the lighting in the parking lot was out and dark and scary and the security guard was all ways on break. The next week all the lights were replaced and two security guards patrolled the lot after dark. They even added extra new carts for people who could not walk the entire store (my wife). Most of the managers are rotated from one store to the next so problems are not followed up on. Now this Wall Mart places all the sales ads at all the check outs with green checks for the cashiers to know what is accepted. Try it you won't get it unless you ask for it, my wife had to "get LOUD" twice before things changed. If you have anymore questions you can email me look at the headers, if I can help I will. My wife got 6 lbs of Hershey's bars because Walgreens sold them a year out of date. Oh and if Kroger or WalMart over charge you then before you leave the store Kroger give you your money back and WalMart if you do it the way I do is get one off the shelf go to service center and tell them I was over charged for this item they scan it refund the money and put in in a bag to carry out, actually Kroger will do the same and so will Safeway. When we had Weingarten store here they did it for you. The two for this price scam Jif peanut butter large size they wrap them together and let's say two for 3.00 well if you don't have the 3.00 then just get one and the cost will be $1.50, no where does it say you must buy two, the sign reads two for $3.00. Now the sign that reads you must purchase ten dollars to get cokes for 2.00 a twelve pack, that stands. If the sign reads you must buy 10.00 to get this deal (XXX) then what you do is separate your order into two piles (any questions) I am shopping for my Neighbor who is unable to come shop, this works for the ten item limit separate the order and pay separately

In our town, Wal*Mart is the only game in town for many things. If we plan
on going shopping, we drive the 20 miles and shop at the stores in "the big
town" and even the Wal*Mart there. Our store says their prices are
competitive to the local area, and that is all they have to be. They won't
even match the Wal*Mart store that is 20 miles away, they tell us if we
want that price, drive there.

What is really stupid is the "big town" has 3 Wal*Marts, 2 super centers
and a standard store. All 3 have different prices, they claim they only
have to match the nearest stores, and they won't price-match the other
stores.

I know several current and former employees, and they are where I get my
info regarding pricing and policies. I have talked to management in the
store and their attitude is that if we can find it cheaper somewhere else
then go there. They don't really care.

Our local store is a standard store, very little in the way of groceries
and what they do carry is their own brand. Anything name brand I have not
heard of them honoring another store's price, I don't know for sure anymore
since I shop at the local one as little as possible these days. Only for
things I need right away. Otherwise I plan a trip and buy elsewhere, where
I can get what I need cheaper.

You know here in Texas the Food chains price match if one has milk for 2.00

then the other like Kroger, WalMart will match that price also coupons we
are on food stamps and they take coupons we get from the Sunday or thurs
newspaper and here is a online coupon place where you go to places like
Kraft and print out coupons and the stores will take them. My wife goes to
the store and get 40/50 bucks off because of coupons.

http://coupons2.smartsource.com/smartsource/index.jsp?Link=5S2ZUA6PWPEPO

Enter your zip and it gives you coupons to use in your area

http://www.couponloop.com/id133.htm

This one has WalMart coupons

and the sales work for meat also Kroger offers 5lbs of chicken legs and
thighs WalMart will match it, eggs you name it we got steaks last week.

The only thing WalMart won't match is buy one get one free.

I drink Diet Cokes, 5~12 packs for $10.00 or two 24 Packs for 11.99

We shop twice a month and my wife saves over 100.00 a month price matching
with all the local stores.

We do the same with coupons. We have small grocers, medium size grocery
chains, and superstores. What I've discovered in our area is that the medium
size grocery chains are cost competitive with the superstores, except, as a
rule, the items have longer expirations dates (i.e. the food is fresher). If
I go to a superstore, though, I usually go to either the grocery superstore
or another all-round-superstore. I avoid Wal*Mart like the plague for too
many reasons to cite in one post.

That's one of Wal*Mart's standard MOs. The move into a small to medium sized
location, put in dirt cheap prices until they drive out the bulk of their
competitors, and then they start saying, "Well, if you can get it cheaper X
miles away, then go there." They know most people won't drive 20-30 miles to
shop for groceries.

I shouldn't even get started on Wal*Mart. I could be here typing all day and
night and well into tomorrow.

For me Walmart is an hours drive away. Plus payment to the driver and
coverage of the driver's fuel cost.
So I'm stuck with the local store, which charges "transportation" on every
item.

Problem with coupons is that they are never for anything that you
=need=, like milk and eggs, only stuff that they =want= to sell you,
which costs more than what you should be buying anyway. I couldn't
ever get anything out of coupons; less than $50 a year...

I know it may not sound like much consolation, but purchasing at your local
store does keep people employed and keeps some business profits in your
locale. I know I feel better about small stores keeping employees up-to-date
about how to collect taxpayer money (foodstamps, Medicaid, WIC, etc.) than
when I hear employees tell me Wal*Mart does. Even moreso after I remember
how many of the Wal*Mart clan don the top richest people in the US list.
Personally, I get tired of subsidizing those fat cats to cover their
payroll.

Very true.
The local grocery store hires all the young kids fresh out or soon to be out
of school. It gives them some praticle experiance.
Sill, the inflated prices are killing my chances to sock away a lil each
month!
I volunteer at the local food pantry and I see the same result in the older
folks who pass through there every month. They strech the finances and
skrimp and save. Some of the older folks have told me they are down to one
meal a day by the time they get to our lil pantry.

Or for that matter, how many strays there are in her neighborhood. :)

It can be done, I've done it, but it requires discipline, patience
and a very strong stomach. Plus, a total lack of pride... You can get
chicken thighs for about 10 cents each....

IMO, the staples she should be buying rarely go on sale. How many
bags of rice or oatmeal go on sale?

Chicken thighs and legs are both good..this has nothing to do with
pride...so you should eat eye of the round while on a fixed income?

Not sure I understand you, Relayer. Eat what you can afford!
Too many people just plain can not cook beyond nuking something
pre-prepared. Among those of us on a fixed income, this is insane.
Cooking is quite simple, and doesn't have to be time consuming.
OBTW, how are you doing? What's your weight nowadays?
