Social Security
Your Social Security
Just in case some of you young whippersnappers (& some older ones)
didn't know this. It's easy to check out, if you don't believe it.
Be sure and show it to your kids. They need a little history lesson on
what's what and it doesn't matter whether you are Democrat or
Republican. Facts are Facts!!!
Our Social Security
Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social
Security (FICA) Program. He promised:
1.) That participation in the Program would be
Completely voluntary,
No longer Voluntary
2.) That the participants would only have to pay
1% of the first $1,400 of their annual
Incomes into the Program,
Now 7.65%
3.) That the money the participants elected to put
into the Program would be deductible from
their income for tax purposes each year,
No longer tax deductible
4.) That the money the participants put into the
independent 'Trust Fund' rather than into the
general operating fund, and therefore, would
only be used to fund the Social Security
Retirement Program, and no other
Government program, and,
Under Johnson the money was moved to
The General Fund and Spent
5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees
would never be taxed as income.
Under Clinton & Gore
Up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed
Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are
now receiving a Social Security check every month --
and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of
the money we paid to the Federal government to 'put
away' -- you may be interested in the following:

It's not "EXCELLENT." It's a pile of BULLSHIT.

I did check it out, and I was right not to believe it.

It never was voluntary. From the outset of the program, persons working
in covered employment were required under the law to pay FICA taxes.
There is no such thing as a voluntary tax.

In the original 1935 law, the rate was initially set at 1% of the first
$3,000 (_not_ $1,400) of earnings. In four stages it was increased until
in 1949 it was 3% on the first $3,000. Nothing in the law ever set the
rate for all time.
> 3.) That the money the participants elected to put

Wrong again. It was never tax-deductible. Federal taxes are never
deductible on federal income tax returns. In fact, Section 803 of Title
VIII (the Social Security Act of 1935) expressly banned this.

Again, incorrect. The Social Security Trust Fund was created in 1935 and
has _never_ been "put into the general fund of the government."
The money in the Fund was not "Spent," it was invested in Treasury
securities.

Wrong. It was in 1983, under Ronald Reagan, that Social Security
benefits were first subject to income tax.

The only people who are paying tax on 85% of their SS benefits are those
with incomes over $34,000 (single) or $44,000 (married).

As noted above, this is not true. The money is still in the Trust Fund,
and always has been.
> Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax

Another falsehood. Since FICA withholding was _never_ deductible, no
party "eliminated" deductibility.
> Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social
> Security annuities?
>

Another lie. As noted above, it was 1983 when SS benefits were first
made taxable. Reagan was president, Bush I was vice president, and Gore
was only a congressman from Tennessee.

More lies. Illegal immigrants are and have always been barred by law
from collecting Social Security benefits.
Immigrants who become citizens or who are resident aliens legally in
this country pay into SS and when eligible receive benefits.

Because it's true. For example, it was Bush II who wanted to destroy SS
by "privatizing" the program.

I could send it to a lot of people. But since it's a pack of lies and
misinformation, I'm not sending it to anybody.

More bullshit. A congressperson must serve at least five years to get
any pension at all, and with only five years of service the pension is
nowhere near 100%. By law, the starting amount of any congressional
pension may not exceed 80% of final salary.
In 2006, the average congressional pension under the current retirement
plan was $39,952. Under the previous plan, it was $60,972.
(Congressional salaries that year were $165,200.)

If you don't like government, go to Somalia. You'll love it.

Anyone dumb enough to accept as fact a chain email or anything published
on a political web blog is doomed to remain ignorant.

Did you hear that the pres took my recommendation and gathered together
another few trillion and each wage earner/child/spouse/immigrant/illegal
alien in the country are going to receive $132,995.22, tax free, for each
year they paid into FICA? If you didn't pay FICA then you only get
$33,228.55.
Now, THAT is stimululating!
