In honor of our friend Dee, I watched the movie Toast when it came up in
rotation on a cable channel. The protagonist, recollection of the
protagonist's childhood at age 9, 1967, in West Midland, England, had a
mother who simply could not cook but could prepare toast with love and
kindness. She died, and Mrs. Potter (Helena Bonham Carter), a wonderful
cook, came to stay with them and would eventually marry his widowed father.
She used food as a weapon of conquest and control.
Miss Carter's performance is wonderful as expected, but the kid is
put upon in some scenes, and downright unsympathetic if not hateful
in other scenes, and as this is based on his own memoirs, you suspect
that he's exaggerating more than a little bit.
It's from Nigel Slater's recollections. He's a well known food writer
in the UK.
It could have been a lot better, but I watched it for HBC, and Dee.
Made for BBC tv, 2010.
