In 5% to 15% of cases, a cancerous lung tumor is detected on a routine
chest X-ray in a person who doesn't have any symptoms. With the
increased use of chest computed tomography (CT) scanning and the fact
that the bottom of the chest is often included in CT scans done when
the abdomen is being evaluated for an unrelated reason, many lung
cancers are incidentally detected.
