I have several meer-lined briars, and really like the smoother smoke. But
I've never taken the big step to a real meerschaum.

The several retailers I deal with all carry meers, but frankly, I don't know
how to tell a good one from a bad one. Notwithstanding my tobaccanists'
advice, what do I need to look for in selecting a properly built, "good"
meer?

Thanks,
Mike

For me if it's a block meerschaum and it has soild joint work, it's
good.

Now finding the solid joint work- that's the kicker! <g>

Bill:

You need to take a trip over to Paul Tatum's site, www.tatumsworkshopcom
,and gander at the conventional joint on the IMP Meers that he has recently
acquired. It is a very tight mortise/tenion fit as good as any Dunhill or
high grade. Big plus is pipe cleaner passes through all the way into the
bowl with no hang up. I am impressed!

Usual disclaimers apply.

Cheers,
Bob

Just noticed I forgot to put the dot between workshop and com. Add it and
the link should work. Sorry.

I'd also like to recommend the Gulel line at www.smokingpipes.com . In my 23
years of selling pipes, I have never seen such excellent consistency in
engineering in a Meerschaum. All are drilled to 4mm with delrin push tenons.
Every one of the meers that I have tested pass the pipe cleaner test (some
needed a twist). My affiliation is that Jon and Sykes are pals and
smokingpipes has donated many meers to PIF.

Best,

Bear

Hello Mike,

You must avoid buying "cheap" meers. There are alot of web sites offering
those kind, also in auctions. Only the purist meerschaum block is suitable
for making "real" meer pipes. I have an expression : "The Purer The
Meerschaum You Smoke, The Higher The Pleasure You Get". The worst thing
someone could do is to buy a "pressed" meer. Tastes like smoking glue! Be
carefull all of these things while you decide.

Have a nice day!

Very impressive website my friend, I'm sure to consider your range very very
seriously next time I'm in the market for a Meerschaum pipe.
Best,
David.
