Just thought I would put up for discussion the rules for the Curling
competitions on ASP.
Here are the rules so far:
-two categories: outdoor smoking and indoor smoking
-pipe chamber dimensions: no wider than 1 inch no deeper than 1 1/2
inches.
-one good charring light, one tamp and one good relight...with a
zippo, butane or anything.
-smoke till the smoke ends. No relights once the pipe has been tamped
and lit.
-tamping is allowed.
-blowing through the bit to clear condensation is allowed or to keep
the pipe lit.
-reposting to ASP Curling Competition thread with a better smoking
time is allowed until the cut-off time
-Competition goes for three days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
There was one comment that we should have a few matches for the whole
bowl. My thoughts on that is that there should be a deduction of 1
minute to empty the bowl tamp it and light it again for each
relight. Does that sound fair? Any other suggestions?

If we have a few matches for the whole bowl, it would be more like a
normal smoke and much less like a slow smoking contest, which I thought
it was supposed to be. I would rather that we could somehow measure the
amount of tobacco instead of limiting the pipes bowl dimensions. I have
pipes that are less than 1 inch in diameter, but are more than 1 1/2
inches deep, and they would hold no more tobacco than the legally
specified chambers. But I do like the 1 charring light and then just one
light for the smoke. You know, like a slow smoking competition.
Otherwise, the smokes would fit right in with the "what are you smoking
now" threads. JMO.

I have two suggestions.
FIRST: two - 1 and a half inch wooden matches to be used within 3
minutes, any lighter can stay lit for an hour.
SECOND: The second is not so easy to level the playing field but a 1 x
1.5 holds 65% more tobacco than a 3/4 x 1.5. This specification does
nothing to level the playing field, which is why all smoking contests
are weighted amounts as well
as the same pipe. The same pipe would be far too limiting so I think
we should treat it as a competitive factor, choose wisely. Weighing
tobacco on a gram scale is fairly partical. Also, smoking of flake vs
ribbon cut - the tobaccos should be the same - idealy the same blend.

We should have a rule on the use of a cleaner. I have refrained but
sure could have used one.

Under the ancient rules, each contestant is given a thimbleful of
tobacco and
allowed two minutes to light up his or her footlong clay pipe.

However, it shouldn't be so complicated that nobody participates.

Use of a cleaner...to absorb any moisture in the pipe...sounds like a
good idea.
However, weighing of tobacco is just out of the question. It is too
difficult for everyone to go out and buy weighing scales for tobacco
contests. It is much easier for people to join the contest if they
have a normal pipe which is less than 1 inch in diamiter and less than
1 1/2 inches deep. What would be great is if a pipe maker could make
a standard contest pipe that is afforable for us all to buy and use
for the Curling contests. Maybe Glenn Tinsky from American could make
one in the 60 to 80 dollar range. He does want to make affordable
pipes after all. I wonder would he consider making an ASP Curling
Pipe for us? How many of you would be interested in that? I would
buy one for sure. It could be just a standard rusticated billiard.

We can't afford $20 for a gram scale but we can afford $60-$80 for a
pipe with standardized chamber?
I think the only way this could possibly get close to a "Longest
Smoking Contest" is for participants to vote from a choice of a few
blends, someone buys a couple of tins and sends out 3 gram packets to
the participants. Now if we could come up with a way that someone
isn't left holding the bag for about $20 it might work.
