ASP& Other Boards

other boards.These other boards as a rule are moderated.Some say too
moderated.On the other hand asp is not moderated at all.A lot of good
folks have left some of them because of trolls,and negative posting.I
suspect that some have even recieved negative private emails regarding
something they posted here.I stated in a recent post that I suspect
that those associated with smoke shops as a matter of policy don't
post on news groups.In fact several of them have told me so.The good
news is that we have people who are part of this group who are not
only involved in pipe smoking things,but have a great deal of
knowledge about said things.We should appreciate their willingness to
share information with us.Let us strive to keep asp on a level that
those here will stay,and some of those who have left will come back.In
order to do that we must remember to post in moderation.It isn't about
winning an arguement.It's about sharing ideas and information.

Arguments have a definite purpose... that is to solve a problem.
To solve a problem, one has to be listening as much (or more) as
stating their case.
One has to keep their head about them and open to avenues of solution.
A good argument is when compromises create a winning solution for all
involved.
Once the argument degrades to you vs. me, it looses its purpose,
becomes a waste of time and troll food.
<g> Grew up in a family with some hard core discipline on arguments
and team work... not military, just po' folks that hadn't quite
recovered from the Depression. ;)

I like to think we Aspians can rise above the petty bickering that is
common to TV and the internet today. Even unmoderated, ASP is model of
decorum compared to other message boards. I hope we can maintain these
high standards because, as pipe smokers, we are naturally more
gentlemanly (Funn dictionary?).

Larry ... one of the major problems of any unmoderated forum such as
ASP is that there is a percentage of people who are nothing more than
society rejects. It could be because of the lack of social skills.
mental disorders and/or just because of who they are that they don't
fit in with the normal world.
These people congregate to the internet and find places they can now
call home. They get swept into this new world they have found where
people pat them on the head and show them pity and kindness and before
ya know it the patients are running the nut house. This is not
good ... when a normal person comes along and speaks there mind or
says the obvious they become the one to be shunned, they become the
attacked under the guise that they are the original attacker and
thusly they need to be attacked.
ASP is what it is and will always be what it is ... nothing more than
a dysfunctional internet society. Peace is a nice thing to dream about
but it is something that will rarely if ever actually happen.

Dave ... give the group as a whole a break. In time you will learn who
should be and who does not need to be just ignored. Once you decide
that then you will find ASP what you make of it and what you want it
to be.
ASP is also just like a gassy dog ... sometimes it just gets right up
on you and is just one huge stinky cloud but that also will drift away
back to the harmonious place you have made for yourself.

I think ASP is great. I have an account on one of the web based pipe
forums but I never post there because it's too much trouble to log in, etc.,
and the site is complex with its several subject grouped individual forums
(etc.) and it's really more than I need or want. Newsgroups are easy to
check every day and easy to read and reply to. I don't like to see people
leave USENET for the web based forums. On some newsgroups that I once used
and found to be very good places to get information, people have completely
abandoned the groups. They have gone to web based forums I guess, but I
won't. I'll just Google for what I need if it comes to that. People all
should do what they can to protect these groups or we won't have them. It's
sad to see old groups that were once excellent, reduced to nothing but a
years or more worth of SPAM and nothing (or little) else. NEVER answer
trolls and off topic SPAM messages; they are often (and usually) cross
posted, and if you answer them that will bring the undesirables here to this
group. Don't give these crackpots an audience; some of them would like
nothing more than to see the group destroyed. In fact on some newsgroups, I
have read posts where they brag about doing just that. Ignore them and use
your kill file. And BTW, I find using a newsreader much better than trying
to read posts using Google Groups; I can't even imagine trying to read
USENET with Google, other than as a way to search old posts, which it is
excellent for. A newsreader (IMO) works so much better and (more
importantly) provides tools for blocking undesirable posters and can block
any key words (such as profanity, etc.) that you wish to block, both within
posts and on the subject line.

I've been reading USENET for a decade now and ASP seems to me to be one of
the most civilized groups I have seen. As a new smoker, I have gained tons
of valuable information here. I appreciate this place very much.

never recieved or felt any negative feedback. I am swamped with work
right now and so I have had little time to post or check whats been
posted. But as fall approached I will be able to ASP more often. When
it gets cold, I will be able to ASP everyday!
Since I have experienced no problems as of yet, I am just going to
assume there aren't any.

'evening all. "Member" since around '03 sometime. In via google,
numerous attemps to install newsreaders....well, fergitaboutit. Most
know a couple yrs ago, the very kind Joe LaVigne (lives only about 40m
from me), come to my house, installed some newsreader. It was ok, but
when modem went to dealer for cleanout, they destroyed it. Joe left me
instructions for re-install. All I got after about 10 tries, after
maybe 5 moves....freezup. Ain't about to ask him to come back & do it
again. True, google's been having numerous brain-farts recently, &
there's no kill-file, but it don't bother me. If I've had a ruff day
at work, reading some a the troll trash gives me a need laff.
Even as a pipesmoker since '62, I've learned quite a bit, made a few
good online friends, had a political/economic debate once, but all in
all, am glad I'm here. Y'all know I've got a self-deprecating sense of
humor....believe it, when I sign as being "ASP's resident village
idiot"....belive it!
I'm also in yahoo pipesmokers2, StokersHaven & one other that be
damned if even know what group it is. I just put the chatroom in
"favorites", but hardly anybodyshows up. As to the ASP chat, I miss
bein' able to join. I've already posted that 5 e-messages to the
listed webmaster have been unanswered (think that's kinda rude), can't
get nobody to come to my house and get me in the chat.
Here's all I know. After installing Java at least 25 times, it shows
I've got somethin' "6", version 2, which supposedly is right for my
computer. It gets to "connected to undernet6667, won't go past that
point, even with 10+ refreshes. A little message at lower left corner
sez "applet jchat started". Here's the kicker....had WIN98 for past
5yrs, never a problem in said chat. Now got XP and....nuttin'.
Whoever the webmaster of the chat is, if you can read this, please do
me the courtesy of answering my many requests for help. I can't see
anybody or anything driving me away from here.

better. I still smoke pipes and I feel great. I guess it's not for
everyone, but I really believe that pipe smoking, properly done, is

1996. There's some good ones and there's some nut job ones (In an
insane world, the sane man is the nut job... btw).
When I had a forum on EZ board, I'd go exploring through that system
to see who had what. One time I found a forum that came up when I
keyed in tobacco pipes... bopped on in and introduced myself... and
instantly got attacked!!
Well, first off that was a cigar forum, not a pipe forum. Why the
devil they came up when I keyed in tobacco pipes in the search engine,
or why they had it in their introduction, I'll never know. 'Cause
they were pretty nasty about pipe smokers.
Secondly, they mistook me for a troll that they had troubles with...
would invent new id's and what not. Finally someone went and looked
in my profile and noticed that I had something like 1800 posts in the
system... oh, yeah, I was their troll guy alright... suuuuuuure.
DUH!
Where upon they chased me down to my board and were very appologetic,
but somehow were digging the hole deeper because... well... even
trying to ingratiate themselves they were insulting. I felt bad about
getting more insulted, cause I knew that really wasn't thier
intent.... but... enh... I just didn't think I wanted further
association with these clowns.
There's an awful lot of psychologically wounded folks in this world,
as well as trolls. Sometimes it only takes minimal patience to see
past it... sometimes it takes far more patience than I've got. (I
guess that also depends on whether past association has been pleasant
or unpleasant...)
In general, IRL, pipe smokers that I've known have been fine folks.
Funny... when I would smoke pipe in public I'd get two different
responses: either I was accused of smoking pot (incidentally... I'm
highly allergic to pot...) or another pipe smoker would come along and
it'd almost be like resuming a conversation where we left it off.
Pretty odd when this other person is a stranger... and pretty neat.

Oddly enough, I've found an occasional cigar doesn't mess up my
sinuses like the pipe does. So, pipes are out and cigars are in. I
smoke 1-2 per week. I still check ASP cause you people are nice.
