How many here blend their own tobaccos?

I haven't tried it, but my frustration with finding a completely
satisfying blend has made me think about getting some Nut Brown Burley
and mixing in some perique and just a dash of latakia to see how it
would turn out.

What blends have you guys come up with?

I blend Stephen WIlliamson's tobacco :) OK, so I blend his Cajun Half
n Half recipe, but it's for me. The only time I ever created a blend,
I mixed 50% Marlin Flake (rubbed out) and 50% MacBaren Navy Flake, and
called it "Narly Flake." I wouldn't really recommend that...just
because you like two individually, doesn't mean they work well
together. "Narly Flake" was not bad per se, it just tasted really
muddled and boring. I guess it was a lesson learned. I think Freddy
Vegas has some folks' recipes posted on his website, but I don't have
the link handy.

I don't know if it is considered a formal blend or not, but the only
think I smoke is BCA and RLP-6 in a 50/50 mix. I found it under a
name many years ago and when the pipe shop was closing down they gave
me the "magic" formula.

For fun on occasion I have added some Latika to it which is a good
change on occasion.

One of my go-to smokes is a 50/50 mix of 1792 and MacB VA #1. I call it
"New Nation", 'cause of what was going on in Virginia in 1792...

The va#1 really tames the 1792, and rounds it out a bit, and the 1792
makes the #1 less one-dimensional.

I blend from components from time to time. Read the basic articles in P&T,
and don't expect miracles from the get-go. Keep notes, taste test over time
(not just when it's blended, but 1, 2, 7, 20 days out), and make incremental
changes when you are fine tuning.

If you like to cook using your own recipes you'll enjoy it. If you don't,
you won't.

from there. I have quite a few different blends in the cellar that I
haven't tried yet; they're aging. FWIW, quite a few contain Nut Brown

write down the percentage of each tobacco. I've never taken notes or
anything like that. It's just for fun. Now I have some of Percy's

My problem with blending is I like to smoke flake, so I probably won't

after I try a little.

I will blend existing blends under two conditions.

1) I have two blends that don't quite do it for me alone. Rattray's
Black Va is too weak and tepid; Penzance is too biting and strong; but
RBV and Penzance together make a nice English mixture. The more
Penzance, the stronger the resulting blend.

2) I have two blends I like that are similar but a bit lacking in
complexity. McConnell's Red VA mixed 50-50 with Hal o the Wynd makes a
wonderful red VA blend. The combination is even better than the
individual parts, IMHO.

I also have had good luck blending Red Va 50-50 with Dunhill
Elizabethan Mixture.

In general I leave the blending to those with resources and skills. I am
farting around with some of Percy Martin's perique. Not to create new blends
per se , rather to better understand perique. The one blend I do make
regularly is an 85-15 blend of Tilbury and G/H DBE. I love them both
individually and usually smoke them solo. I keep the amalgam around for when
I want the taste of Birdseye w/o the hammer and Tilbury w/o the flames it
sometimes yeilds [usually due to hitting it too hard]. The blend is not as
good as the individual smokes but I find the combo fun when I want a light
dose of either tobacco or I'm driving and can't afford to swoon.

Most of what I smoke are my own home-made concoctions ; two Va/P
mixes and a couple aromatics . I have blended togather equal parts of :
Royal Jersey Perique , Solani , Dunhill Deluxe rolls ,Astley's No 2
,with an equal amount of Bayou Morning , dried it then rehydrated with
essence of Brandy , left it to meld , added another part of JJFox
Dorisco and a wee dram of Latakia , left to rest for about two months
and it has been my premier Perique smoke for the last six months .
My other blend envleves a pound of C&D straight Burley dried and
then sprayed with fruit flavouring essences , allowed to soak it up ,
then added a wee bit of C&D Suwar . This is my office smoke .
I have also blended Brown flake with equal parts of Astley's 109 ,
Royal Yacht , touches of McClelland's 5100 , and C&D Yorktown . This is

3-4 parts McClelland 5100 to 1 part Dan Tobacco Sweet Vanilla Honeydew.
Tastes like, well, what I'd imagine ambrosia & smells absolutely

I don't blend from scratch. I do, like many in this thread, amend in
order to salvage less than satisfactory tasting adventures. Here is an
example:

I generally dislike GLP's overspiced portfolio, I similarly dislike
most, if not all, of the burleys. I find that a 60/40 mix of
Plumcake/Mephisto neutralizes both these problems. Suprisingly it is a
mix that has found it's way into my rotation and I find myself smoking
the combination "down to the ash" which is something I rarely do.

I mix a couple of blends together with some consistency.

First, EMP and Penzance. It was suggested by a guy I bought a Tinsky year
pipe (forget which year) and he said it had only touched EMP or EMP mixed
with Penzance. My reaction is why ruin two great tobaccos? This is
blasphemy. however I tried it in various ratios. While I still enjoy them
separately, together they make a most complex (sorry) and spicy English
latakia-oriental-Virginia blend! I call it EMPenzance. I find it best
mixed about 70 % Penzance and 30 % EMP. You get a deeper, fuller, EMP or a
spicier, more obviously complex Penzance by varying the ratio. Anyway, I've
mentioned this for years here on ASP but I have yet to hear any comments
from others who may have tried it. I'd be curious to hear how others find
this. For a while it was my main smoke.

Second, I mix in a little McConnell's pure Havana in with McC's 5100. Like
a sweet mild cigar!

I have never made any Cajun Half and Half, but when Steve started making
it, he sent me a little. I smoked a bowl, and found it OK, but not
completely to my tastes. I threw it in a Mason jar, sealed it up, and have
just opened it today.

It is pretty well aged. I am guessing 2 years, maybe 1 1/2. Perhaps Steve
can jump in, since I got it in the beginning... ;-) It is very good now.
Smokes cool, very nice texture, rounded flavors, no harshness.

Good job, Steve, and thanks (again) for the tobacco!

I did a bit of blending a while back. What I used were not individual
tobaccos, but rather currently available blends.

The best I came up with was one I call OMAR'S HAWK. It consists of a
nice portion of McClelland's 2015 and a bit of McClelland's 2025. The
2025 both perks up, and tames down, the 2015. This is the best I came
up with, and I smoke in almost daily.

For the best results I've found it best to combine blends from the same
original blending house.
