Voodoo Queen - Aromatic

Without hashing out all the whys and wherefores I'm mixing up my usual
pipe smoking to take time to see what's new in the (gasp from crowd)
aromatic world. I've a number of fresh cobs lined up for this, and
have already posted results on a few. Today's selection is...Voodoo
Queen from Altadis.
All my descriptions are subject to my own palate, and in no way are
meant to be a professional "review", just my impressions. ( I can do a
good Ed Sullivan if you wish...or remember him!)
Opening the bag the smell of latakia was there, a little Virginia,
some of the perique was noted but not all that much to the nose, and
something else, sort of sweetish. Not heavy sweet like some of the
aromatics I've endured on this trip, but a hint of something sugary.
All in all, it was pleasant to me, and not a harbinger of a hot smoke
as some high sugar blends can be.
The tobacco was medium and dark tobaccos, in a kind of broken flake,
with a coarse cut leaving some rather thick slivers of the tobacco
intact. Smokeable as is, I decided to leave it in it's form instead of
rubbing it out.
Charring light was typical, except the tobacco wanted to take fire a
little more than I expected. Real light delivered an easy full top
light, no issues.
First flavors were of an English, with little perique coming
through, despite it's name. As I got into the smoke, the perique came
alive (the zombie effect?) The perique in this is about middle of the
road for me, though I expected a bit more because of the Louisianna
connection. It's certainly there, just not the overwhelming perique I
may have expected.
So now I've got a moderate English with perique going, plenty of
smoke, and....what's this other flavor? The sweet element that I noted
in the bag is there, not heavy, but starting to take ahold and then it
has something else going on, some kind of flavoring like a musty
chocolate that's faintly in the background with something else (that
after I read the description was supposed to be coffee). It's
interfering with the tobacco flavors in a way that I'm not sure I want
to persue. Still , I have decided to check this one out, and I will
continue on.
About 1/2 way through the bowl things settle down a bit with the
background mocha "flavoring" taking a lesser role and the smoke this
stuff produces is not going to make my wife happy at all, lol. Matter
of fact, I'm not happy with the room note either! Not overwhelmingly
bad, it's just confusing to me as I can smell the topping mixed with
the English style smoke and though not cloyingly sweet, my sniffer
just doesn't know what the hell I'm smelling.
The flavor now is a bit more on the perique than early on in the
bowl, and I like that aspect. The latakia is there, more condimental
than dominant, and the weird experience with the flavoring is just a
little background noise for now. Nice little peppery flavor to the
smoke, but that damn "what is it" flavor comes back, and it doesn't
remind me of coffee, chocolate, or "mocha" slices either. Tolerable,
not horrible, and a few times through the bowl it worked ok with the
tobacco.
I didn't notice any bite, though I'm sure that if I pushed it really
hard it would be glad to do so. Burned without a problem to the end of
the bowl as in no relights, but there were just a few bits of humid
tobacco in the bottom when done.
After 3 bowls of Voodoo Queen, I can say that it was an interesting
smoke, and I dont' regret trying it at all. It had moments when I
think I understood what they were trying for, but it wasn't good
enough to merit buying any for later use. It had times through the
bowl when it was a little harsh, not in the bitey sense, but just a
sort of harsh acrid smoke, maybe because of the topping which although
it's not heavy is most definately there.
I know this stuff has some fans, and I'm a firm believer in "Smoke
what you like, like what you smoke".
I would have liked to try this without the topping, just to see what
the flavoring did to it. ...

in P&T back in the day, except there's were generally shorter.

Pretty accurate review of Voodoo Queen. Better than the one I wrote
several years ago. I just don't have the palate to tease out the
nuances you remarked about.
That said, the Queen is my "go to" blend. First, I'm not a fan of
Latakia bombs, (nor is my wife) so this has enough for interest, but
won't peel the paint off the walls!
I'm a VaPer kind of guy, and, dollar-for-dollar, this is a good value.
Yes, there is some aromatic element to this, but I don't find it
offending. I also like the, umm, broken flake presentation.
I've only found one Internet seller of this blend (pipesandcigars.com)
and they've had it on backorder for, well, months.
Emailed Altadis, and they said it wasn't doing as well as they
expected, which distressed me. Next order will get into the cellar,
fer'sure.
Oh, finally, put some away for a couple of years. The aromatic element
fades away, and the healthy Virginia matures into a wonderful smoke.
Highly recommended.

Thanks for chiming in on this one and letting me know that to your
experience as a regular smoker of VQ you don't think I'm too far off
your impressions. Like I indicated earlier, we all know that these
kinds of things are a personal experience and for the most part
subjective. I think that I will take your advice about againg this to
get some of the aromatic component to fade a bit. I liked that tobacco
itself, which is evident in my writeup, and really would like to try
it without the flavoring, or at least lighter in the flavoring
department.

I appreciate your taking the time to read and comment on my
ramblings as I dig through these blends. Keeps me accountable on my
aromatic forays, which I've committed to and have found that without
the posting or some other mandate I tend to revert to smoking my
"regular" tobaccos and don't continue to take the journey.
Reviews are so personal that I sometimes think that they are more
for the writer than the reader. They provide a way, besides a journal,
to think constructively about a blend for me and get as accurate as my
limited lexicon allows so that I can read it and then ask others what
they think about the blend and how similar or different their
impressions are.
And they also help me stay in touch with the good folks here, Bob,
lol.
Thank you again for your kind encouragement, and I hope that should
you have trouble getting to sleep that you can read one of my reviews
and solve the problem...:>)

Thanks for taking the time to read my long diatribe on VQ, Paul. I
appreciate that this kind of longwinded rambling can be tedious
reading and that the readers' time is precious. FWIW, I've never seen
you post something that left me wondering "what the hell did that
mean?", so it appears you have a way with words also!

Hey Travis....I did a google search on Voodoo Queen Pipe Tobacco...I
found some places that have it....if you like it stock up....I went thru
the same thing with the old #53 Rum&Maple....bought the last 3 tubs on
the planet from Iwan Ries....lol.....:)

blend in a shop on the river in Savannah Ga.....was not bad and think it

Well, This HAS been fun!
Rechecked my origional message and I did mention that I had checked
with Pipes&Cigars, my 'go to' e-tailer for the stuff. I am aware that
it's on backorder, and will have bide my time 'til they get it in.
Fun Fact: I believe I was the individual who called Pipes&Cigars a
bunch of years ago and got them to stock Voodoo Queen. I'd gotten a
sample from Altadis and t'was love at first match.
Oh, one other point; I'm sort of a Googleholic. I must have checked a
dozen internet Tobacco sellers looking for the stuff. Contrary to what
my wife would tell you; I'm not lazy, and only moderately stupid. Or
is it the other way around?
