We do of course have to factor in that some of these male
immigrants are small children or elderly; even so, we do not
have any reason to claim rape is typical behaviour for
immigrants.
But Aftenposten brings us a different, additional statistic:
222 women sought out the rape section of the acute medical
aid in Oslo last year. Only 67 reported the incident to the
police. This is, regrettably, a new low record for the
section.
In other words, 70% of rape incidents are never
investigated. (This is not an absolute number - remember
that many victims never approach any institution at all.)
How does rape happen? Our image of a rape is a sick man
hiding in a park or by the Aker river after dark, raping
random girls passing by. This is not the "norm". The
majority of rape victims are raped by a person they know,
not by a stranger in a dark alley. "Date rape" is a term
from english speaking countries, and fits fairly well. One
gets into a situation where the man does not understand
common conventions, and does not respect a "no".
What the spread of perpetrators looks like in the shadow
numbers on rape is hard, if not impossible, to tell. It is
by no means certain that the spread looks like the one in
the reported incidents.
When other statistics tell us that close to half of the
norwegian populace believe that immigrants are more
frequently criminals than ethnic norwegians, do we have a
contributing factor to rape victims blaming themselves when
the rapist is a white norwegian they know well? A boyfriend,
a friend, a colleague? We know far too well how difficult it
is for a rape victim to go trough a trial with all the
hardships that implies. When the perpetrator is familiar to
them, the process becomes even more difficult.

Both are newsitems regarding record numbers or rapes
reported. They state that more women are seeking medical
assistance, and more women are going to the police with
rapes. The numbers referred to in the Norwegian item seems
to indicate that rather than the 70% of women who sought
medical assistance but did not report, the number for 2005
is less than 50%.
While this item (from a socialist democrat newspaper) simply
refers the statistics and state that a large number of rapes
likely still go unreported, the swedish item enters into
more detail for the Malmö area, mentioning a number of
effective measures taken to help more rape victims. It
includes the fact that "The majority of rapes takes place
indoors, and she knows the perpetrator well - not seldom, he
is the boyfriend, cohabitant or spouse." Still, reported
outdoor rapes have doubled, from 20 to 40.
Got anything more for me? If you want some thoroughly
translated material, I'm going to have to charge you. My

paper/longterm-publishing context, I'd recommend you use a
