Tater was thinkin of gettin some, and he don't want to spend a lot of
money for second best.

Also, Tater's gonna need some hardware, so he could use some advice on
that too.

I suggest Auto-Cad software and Black & Decker hardware.

But that's just because I haven't really looked at hardware in a long
while. I will vouch for B&D's quality, as of a couple decades ago.
None of it's needed replacement.

Photoshop works real well. I have an old (ver. 5) that came free with
a scanner, long since dead. PShop still works, and I have yet to use
all the features of that eldred softiness. Kai's PowerTools has some
real good filters for PShop - I only ever use vortex tiler, but your
taste might differ from mine.

PowerTacks is a PC sound recorder that works real well, and is lots
cheaper than most others. Cubase comes free with most sound
interfaces, but I haven't managed to get it to work consistently.

For video, I've used iMovie, and Pinnacle on PC. iMovie kicks
Pinnacle's butt all around the block, especially when it comes to
titles.

I have about a dozen still-working computers, most too old to be
considered real 'pooters these days. The best hardware, by far, is my
PowerBook G4. The PriMate has a Sony Vaio, which seemed pretty cool
before, but now it's way underRAMmed, and cludged up so as to be
unusable. She got an eeePC, but finds the screen and keyboard too
small. She's one of those people who actually types well, and that
dinky thing is cramping her style. We're gonna check out the new
model, which seems to be a bit bigger. We have these units because I
stumble over great deals, not because we can just go out and buy what
we want. But her birthday is soon, so I'll see to it she has something
she can use.

A real good picture wrangler came with our Fuji camera - Fuji FinePix.
It's like iPhoto, but it doesn't hide the files in nonsensical
directories.

This is not addressing your actual query at all, is it? But I just
couldn't pass up a chance to chat in Tater's direction. I've been
hangin' out with Meow too much. My forbearance is all shot. So long,
I have to fire up the stove and get supper running.

Haha.

uTorrent to download stuff, Media Player Classic and VLC Player to
play videos, winamp to play music, evillyrics to display lyrics to
music as it plays, Tag&Rename to tag mp3s, Acoustica mp3 to wav
converter to convert mp3s to WAV for processing, Cooledit to process/
edit wavs, normalize.exe to normalize songs by WAV, Xing mp3 encoder
for CBR encoding, LAME mp3 encoder for VBR encoding, and Nero to burn
it all to disc. 4NT for a superior command-line, Firefox for a
browser, and cygwin to get all those nice unix powers under a windows
machine without having to deal with the hell of unix.

Oh wait. You weren't serious.

It wasn't THAT funny but he did a funny double-take while it sunk in

Tater's got the CoolEdit pro and regular version both, and he gots
Firefox. Now he just needs some software, and he'll be ready to go.
