It is a pretty dumb web site. I agree. There's some funny stuff on
it though. But mostly I just used it while I was teaching myself HTML

That's because Michael Alcandor!, as he has mentioned elsewhere,
writes, and appears to believe he is famous for writing, that kind of
academic, incredibly irritating music which you could classify as
classical/modern or classical/experimental (you wouldn't really prefix
it "classical" but it comes from that tradition), which very few
people but academics listen to.
Apparently while Michael Alcandor! has been paid vast fortunes for
this music and is regularly whisked around the world on jets to
perform it, there are no recordings of it anywhere nor any apparent
mentions of Michael Alcandor! or this music of his anywhere.
It's the kind of music that you generally need an advanced degree in
music theory to write, or even listen to (because if you don't know
music theory, you won't understand why this harmonic that is so
dissonant that it makes the fillings fall out of your mouth is
actually GOOD).
Which is undoubtedly why this subject drives him into hysterics. I
mean, a slightly larger volume of hysterics than the usual baseline
level of hysterics which the evil satanic viacom jewish conspiracy
leaves him at.
I remember now that I told him once how idiotic that whole form of
music was. I forgot until just a minute ago, unfortunately while I
remember some moments in the great Michael Alcandor! drama, he doesn't
really leave much of an impression on me.
What Michael Alcandor! calls Important music. Like John Cage and his
famous 4'33", which is 4 minute 33 seconds of silence.
It's INNOVATIVE! It's GROUND-BREAKING! It's IMPORTANT!
But it's also very similar to a lot of other four and a half minute
stretches of silence.
Academic music, while I don't think it's all bad, puts theory before
the experience itself. Music theory analyses and systematizes how
music works, and Important music tries to then take that body of
theory and go new places with it.
But of course the results are often just dumb. Like duodecephonic
music and 4'33".
It's like when Ornette Coleman took the structures of increasing
freedom in Jazz and invented Free Jazz in the late sixties. It was a
fine theory. But nobody liked it. As Thelonious Monk said, "It just
doesn't swing."
So I don't doubt for a second that Michael Alcandor! knows vastly more
about music theory than I do. I don't doubt he has a degree in music
theory.
All I know about music theory is just enough self-taught stuff to be
useful to me listening to music or writing it. That's all I really
have any desire to know.
My only point originally was that I knew enough to be able to tell
that the Slayer song, Cast Down, actually had a much more
sophisticated structure than the vast majority of pop rock tunes.
Which is true.
Michael Alcandor! is apparently arguing that I claimed to have some
vast knowledge of music theory, which is not anything I ever said. As
usual, that was just the shrieking voices in Michael Alcandor!'s head.

Although I do like some of Ornette, just for the record. And there's
quite a lot of experimental music I like quite a lot. Not that I
think the whole form is bad or useless.
Just that arguing about who is an Important musician is dumb, and
misses the whole point of music.
It's like arguing about whether a particular sexual encounter was
Important or not, then getting a book on sex theory to prove your
point.
Either it swings, or it doesn't.
